LSBU and Nanjing Vocational University of Industry Technology launch Joint Institute for engineers

10 June 2025

The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China has officially approved the establishment of the London South Bank University (LSBU) – Nanjing Vocational University of Industry Technology (NJUIT) Joint Institute.

This marks a major step forward in LSBU’s strategic commitment to practice-based transnational education. The new Joint Institute will deliver undergraduate programmes designed to meet the growing global demand for engineers with both theoretical insight and applied skills. The three programmes to be launched are:

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Advanced Vehicle Engineering

These programmes have been carefully developed to reflect technological transformation across sectors such as electric mobility, intelligent manufacturing and digital energy systems. Students will also benefit from opportunities to study abroad, participate in staff and student exchanges, and engage in joint professional development initiatives across both institutions.

NJUIT has built a long-standing reputation for excellence and consistently ranks among China’s top 50 vocational institutions for international impact. Recognised with the Gold Award for Applied Research and Innovation by the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP), NJUIT hosts over 500 international students from more than 40 countries.

Professor Tara Dean and Professor Deborah Johnston, Interim Co-Vice Chancellors at LSBU, commented: “This approval deepens a partnership rooted in shared values — practical learning, innovation, and inclusive access to opportunity. Together, LSBU and NJUIT are building a new platform for engineering education that responds directly to global industry needs and prepares students for leadership in an interconnected world.”

Xie Yonghua, Chancellor, and He Xuejun, President of NJUIT, added: “Our partnership with LSBU brings together two dynamic cities — London and Nanjing, on the Thames and the Yangtze — to create a shared educational venture that will shape the engineers of tomorrow. With the endorsement of China’s Ministry of Education, we are proud to set a new benchmark for international collaboration in applied higher education.”

This joint initiative reaffirms LSBU’s commitment to developing global partnerships that deliver relevant, transformative education — connecting students to careers, communities, and knowledge across borders.
