Engineering field trip to Dorset

Dept of Urban Engineering staff and students from our BEng, BSc and HNC Civil Engineering and HNC Railway Engineering courses recently travelled to the Dorset coast for a 5 day field trip in engineering geology
01 November 2013

The Dept of Urban Engineering contingent were joined by staff and students from HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands and Münster University of Applied Sciences, Germany as well as local geologists and former members of LSBU staff.

After an initial coach malfunction at Winchester service station, and a stop at Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire for an overview of coastal erosion, the whole party arrived in Weymouth late Monday evening.

Throughout the (very sunny and warm) week, the group visited local coastal sites including the Lulworth area, Lyme Regis and Chesil beach to study the local geology and its influence on the shape and stability of the coastline as well as coastal defence and protection methods employed to preserve land at risk. The final day saw visits to quarries on Portland.
