Record 32 elite athletes recruited to LSBU’s Academy of SportAthletes join Academy of Sport's Elite Sports Programme offering a wide range of financial and academic support for talented sportspersons
LSBU has recruited its highest number of elite athletes in recent years, bringing the total for this academic year to 32.
LSBU has maintained its focus sport of basketball and has recruited eight players of the current Brixton Topcats WBBL team, including ex-junior Great Britain internationals Josephine Salmon and Krystal Charles.
Other athletes competing at the highest level include Alexandra Lara and Ioannis Timagenis who are both members of the Great Britain and Greece national teams respectively in the sport of taekwondo.
"We're hugely excited to have recruited such high calibre athletes to LSBU this year," says Iain Killoughery, LSBU Student Sport & Activities Manager. "We're very much looking forward to seeing these talented sportspeople don the university colours and represent LSBU in national competitions.
"We're confident that we can compete against the best in the country over the coming months. Good luck to all our students involved in sports clubs as they start their fixtures this week."
The Elite Sports Programme is run by the Academy of Sport at LSBU to support talented sportsmen and women balance their sporting, academic and personal lives.
The programme has become one of the largest for a UK university. It offers a wide range of help, from financial to academic support, making it possible for students to complete their education and succeed in their sport at a high level.
