LSBU's first artist in residence to host 'Open Studios' event

Importance of ‘outsider art’ in health and social care education is at the heart of the latest installation by LSBU's first artist in resident, Xavier White

London South Bank University’s (LSBU) first artist in residence, Xavier White, is hosting an ‘Open Studios’ event 9-16 December, 2016.

Xavier's latest multi-media installation demonstrates how art can be used in health and social care education. Himself the survivor of a traumatic, near fatal head injury following a cycle accident in his late teens, Xavier demonstrates how outsider art can stimulate new ways of thinking, seeing and engaging with care - and the contribution it can make to developing compassion and resilience.

Following a widely-acclaimed summer fair art installation, Xavier’s work has drawn attention to LSBU’s School of Health and Social Care from many community wellbeing group visitors. Professor Sally Hardy, who, along with Pro Dean Professor Warren Turner, has initiated and supported this latest innovation at the School, said: “Visitors will experience a rare insight into the various working drawings and practices of our resident artist, who brings a whole new, three-dimensional approach to teaching students and staff about the art and neuroscience of caring.”

The event will include a tour of Xavier’s studio space and showcase new pieces of his work at their various stages of creation. Due to restricted space, those wishing to attend must pre-book on Eventbrite. Opening times and location details are included on the booking site.

LSBU art mentor, Angela Morris-Winmill, who provides specialist support to Xavier, commented: “This is a show not to be missed. Xavier is a talented artist and I am honoured to support him as our first artist in residence. He has so many creative ideas and we are already exploring new pieces for a further art installation show planned at LSBU in February 2017.”

An evening wine reception on 9 December will launch the 'Open Studios' event showcasing Xavier’s work. Full details are available on Eventbrite.
