Panellists Include:

  • Dr Meredith Barr joined LSBU as a lecturer in the Division of Chemical & Energy Engineering in 2023, having previously worked at Imperial College London. She has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London, and a BSc in Chemical-Biological Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on converting by-products of agriculture and forestry into a variety of sustainable materials by processing complimentary fractions of biomass in parallel. These materials include biochars, bioplastics, and biocomposites. Her current research projects involve using biochars to regulate soil composition and filter wastewater, and manufacturing lignin-based photoprotective materials and structural biocomposites using ionic liquids. Dr Barr founded and coordinates the BBSRC Environmental Biotechnology Network’s Biochars for Pollution Prevention working group, which focuses on interactions between biochar and microorganisms at the Water-Wastes-Soil nexus.
