University of the Year for Graduate Employment

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. David Phoenix, writes on the university's recent success:

I am very pleased that, today, London South Bank University has been named University of the Year for Graduate Employment by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, acknowledging the highly skilled jobs and impressive salaries commanded by our students after graduation.

This achievement rightly recognises the emphasis that LSBU places on delivering accredited courses relevant to the challenges of the modern workplace - ensuring we are teaching the skills employers are looking for.

Following on from being named Entrepreneurial University of the Year 2016, the message to students who want to develop the skills needed for success in work and life is clear - they should look no further than LSBU.

We have a highly diverse student body, with a majority of state educated and BME students, many of whom are also the first in their family to attend university, yet 82% of our graduates are in professional jobs or further study within six months and our graduates’ median salaries, at £24,000, are among the best in the country. Recent data shows that in six subjects we admitted students with the lowest grades who went on to earn a higher than average median salary.

A key factor in this remarkable success is our work to embed enterprise into the curricula and create a vibrant enterprise ecosystem across the university. Enterprise is a set of practical and creative problem-solving skills which are as valued in an employee as they are in an entrepreneur.

Enterprising students see opportunities in all areas of life and they have the skills, confidence, creativity and discipline to seize them. LSBU empowers our students to be game changers – to develop, not just the knowledge, but the skills and attitude needed for success in work and in life.

We deliver engaging and accessible programmes fuelled by a passion to create something. We build our students’ social capital and confidence through programmes of volunteering, opportunities to join or lead our student societies and sports clubs. We help them to apply the knowledge they’ve acquired through placements, internships and initiatives such as our Legal Advice Clinic, Business Solutions Centre and new Digital Skills Centre. We provide industry standards facilities, such as our virtual engineering suite and Elephant Studios, to give them a practical grounding in our teaching.

Since its foundation LSBU has been committed to providing the tools and opportunities to allow students to achieve their aspirations in life. After 125 years our success in achieving that mission is still being affirmed with awards such as this.

Commenting on our award, Alistair McCall, editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide said: “London South Bank has an outstanding record for graduate employment. It is a shining example of all the best qualities held by the modern university sector. Year after year, the university appears close to the top of our tables for graduate employment and graduate salaries.

“It’s no accident. Courses are often designed to meet the specific needs of industry and the university enjoys close ties across many business sectors, particularly with the construction industry.”
