Thomas Boulding, BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
This LSBU graduate student is in no doubt about what drove him to pursue a career in occupational therapyIt was seeing the profound difference that the skills of a qualified Occupational Therapist can have on such a wide range of people that brought Thomas to the profession.
Inspired
"I was originally inspired through working with youngsters with neurological disabilities, and seeing what a difference occupational therapy made to not only just their clients but also their families and other professionals working with them," he explains. "Promoting health and well-being through activity really appeals to me."
With his career path firmly decided, Thomas began looking for a university that could deliver the kind of education that would best prepare him for a career as an occupational therapist. It wasn't long before his research led him to LSBU: "Occupational therapists recommended the course to me as it teaches applicable skills and the staff are experienced therapists. I also wanted to study in London, so the reputation and location of LSBU was a big part of my decision to study here, and I have not been disappointed." Read more about our location.
Relevant work experience
At LSBU, we pride ourselves on preparing our graduates for their chosen career, ensuring that they leave with relevant work experience as well as the understanding of how to put theory into practice. It's a philosophy that is certainly paying dividends for Thomas, who cannot speak highly enough of the University's links with outstanding hospitals and specialist areas of practice in and around London. "My learning experiences have been really broad," says Thomas when describing how study at LSBU has given him a solid grounding in the practical aspects of occupational therapy. "So far I have had placements in specialist community mental health settings, inpatient neurology and physical rehabilitation. I'm also due to spend a further placement period in paediatrics to round off my placement experience, which I think will really help to prepare me for practice."
Continuing education
Like many LSBU students, however, Thomas does not see the end of his degree as the end of his studies. He hopes to gain a band 5 rotation role in a hospital and to specialise in neurological rehabilitation, as well as continuing his education as his career develops, and is very keen to continue working with LSBU: "While studying I have met some amazing like-minded people, and I have enjoyed the chance to study something I am so passionate about on a daily basis. If, like me, you work holistically, combining scientific and creative skills to really make a difference to people's lives, then occupational therapy is for you."
