Shahrukh Irfan, Senior Lecturer, Accounting and Finance”I was looking for a place that was flexible enough to cater to my unique circumstances of having my family live abroad. Even though I had other job offers, LSBU was kind enough to accommodate my situation"
Shahrukh Irfan, Senior Lecturer in Taxation, was living abroad when he applied to be a tutor at LSBU - ”I was looking for a place that was flexible enough to cater to my unique circumstances of having my family live abroad. Even though I had other job offers, LSBU was kind enough to accommodate my situation."
“I am a practitioner”
Shahrukh studied his MSc in Accounting and Finance as he was aspiring to go into the field of investment banking. However, the credit crisis hit and finding a job in the financial sector wasn’t easy. The Big 4 firms were hiring, and he joined KPMG in their tax sector.
Shahrukh worked in practice for many years but was always interested in teaching and, before he came to the UK, had been teaching since he was just 16. In 2017, he began working at a university as it allowed for flexibility around his personal requirements and family life. However, after three years he decided to choose between going back into practice or academia: “I got job offers for practice, but I thought I would also try to apply for a university position”.
Since being appointed as a lecturer for BA Accounting and Finance at LSBU, Shahrukh has already set short term goals for the role; “I want to develop a MSc degree programme for tax specialisation. Very few universities in the UK offer this currently and it could be a unique offering for us”.
“I haven’t met anyone who wasn’t smiling or helpful”
Although he has only worked at LSBU Business School for a short time, Shahrukh feels very content: “I have a very good team. I haven’t come across anyone who wasn’t smiling or helpful”. New to Higher Education in the UK, he wasn’t aware of the etiquette here and has discovered that everyone has different work ethics and social culture - “everyone has been very welcoming, and I wasn’t expecting them to be this friendly”.
Learn about tax
Shahrukh’s module, Advanced Taxation, enables students to develop their skills in order to become tax consultants at a beginner level. They also learn about tax returns and how to give advice on how to plan for the next tax year, inheritance and dividends. There is also a practical side to this module and students can move onto study for ACCA and CIMA professional exams after studying at LSBU Business School, “particularly helpful for those keen to qualify and work in practice”.
