Samantha Mann, BSc (Hons) Children's Nursing, mature student
Now in her second year and feeling confident about her long-term future, Samantha has grand plans for after she graduates. "LSBU is enabling me to fulfil my dream of becoming a Children's nurse. I may work for 18 months, perhaps doing the rotation at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and then move to Australia to work in Sydney's children's hospital for a year, and then move on again. I want to gain experience in as many ways as I can before settling down."
Before studying Children's Nursing, Samantha worked with Cherry Childcare in 2003 as an assistant nurse and worked her way up to team supervisor. She acquired NVQ levels 2 and 3 in Childcare learning and development while there. She then joined the Children's Trust, to support her financially through university and to gain more experience to roll into her learning.
Although she is still working when she can at the Children's Trust, Samantha has also become a Student Ambassador at LSBU in order to gain more experience in working with children and meeting new people. So many of Samantha's university experiences have been aimed towards helping her realise her dream of becoming a Children's Nurse
For Samantha, having the opportunity to train at Great Ormond Street Hospital was a big factor in deciding which university to attend. It was also important to her that the university she attended was located in London and easy to get to, as she commutes into the city.
A typical day for Samantha can be quite varied. "I get the bus to university and from it there's a great view over to the Houses of Parliament. Most days I have lectures from about 9am to 4pm or 5pm, but often I have a spare hour or two where I go to the library or to the Student Union if I'm feeling more social than studious!""At the end of the day I try to go to the gym – it's hard to find an excuse to not go when it's right on campus! I'm proud of how hard I have worked, and how I am managing my course work, social life and work outside the university." Read more about our student facilities and our NHS partners.
