Neville De Silva, Mental Health Nursing Graduate, Havering

Neville De Silva has spent more time than most at LSBU's Havering campus. He has studied three courses there and now helps out the staff by teaching classes as well.

Convenient location

Neville decided to study at LSBU at the Havering campus as it was much closer to his home than Southwark Campus. As a result he was able to save a lot of time he would have spent travelling.

"My first experience of LSBU was way back in late 1990s as a trainee nurse at Havering Campus. I had the most interesting three years in the leafy Havering area. To name a few: the location; the class room facilities to learn theory; the more appropriate placement areas to learn practice skills; the seminars; workshops; group work; a brilliant social life and last but not the least the ever dedicated staff who worked tirelessly."

Connections secure placements

Having studied BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing, Neville is aware of the importance of securing placements for nursing students. Being based in Havering was no limit to achieving this. "The placements provided by Havering Campus are very convenient to most students. Considerations were made for an individual's post code and thereby placements were allocated as close as possible. I have experienced both general nursing and mental health nursing placements. LSBU is linked to very good Trusts and most of us are now working in them."

Feeling of community

It was the community feel on the campus which most intrigued Neville.

It was not a huge campus therefore I felt like that almost everyone knew everyone. It was a bit like a family, especially within each class or cohort. But surely the best thing about studying at LSBU was socially learning about other cultures; seeing different values, beliefs, attitudes, religions and spirituality thanks to the vast diversity of students from different parts of the world.

"I have already recommended Havering Campus to so many and I have no hesitation in recommending now and in the future."
