Nursing student Charlie shares his views on his flatmates, life in south London, the LSBU community and what you need to bring with you if you're thinking of living in halls.

Located in one of London’s most exciting and rapidly changing regeneration areas, Elephant and Castle is full of startups, entrepreneurs, and global brands. We work with these local employers to help build our curriculum and bring real-world issues into your modules, getting you hands on in the workplace and ready to hit the ground running when you graduate.

LSBU HUB

We’ve recently invested more than £65 million into new social and teaching spaces to help with your studies and improve your wellbeing. Opening its doors in 2022, our award winning ‘LSBU Hub’ is a favourite amongst our students, with its state-of-the-art library, group and self-study areas, and numerous cafes and places to hang out with friends. Our newly built on-campus gym also offers great value for money.

IN THE HEART OF LONDON

Trains from surrounding counties are approx. £12 and take 30 minutes, or if you’re travelling by bus or tube, it’s just £5 a day with a TfL student travel card. It’s also just a 10 minute from London Waterloo and 15 minutes from London Bridge, two of the capital biggest stations.

Whether you live nearby, commuting across London or from further afield, it doesn’t have to break the bank.

London is bustling with modern day life, but you’re also surrounded by history. Whether it's soldiers’ rations from the Great War, visceral pieces by Tracey Emin or Twelfth Night at the Globe, you don’t have to go far for your hit of culture. Creative geniuses from around the world come to south London to express themselves. The world-famous Tate Modern gallery holds over 100 years of art and is just a 15-minute walk away or hop on a tube to the West End to see a play or musical in one of 40 iconic theatres.

There’s so much to love in the capital. Walk to the tallest building in Europe in the time it takes the elevator to reach the top; walk over Tower Bridge in the sunshine; see the oldest prison in the country – and that’s just before lunch. Everything you could want to see is at your fingertips.

London is vibrant and busy but there’s tons of green spaces too with famous parks, natural landscapes, and hidden gems where you exercise and relax. Enjoy the views of Buckingham Palace and London Eye from St James’ Park, just 20 minutes by Tube. Elephant Park is just a ten-minute walk from campus, and as well as it being a place to eat, drink and shop, it’s the perfect place for an afternoon stroll, a place to study outdoors or just unwind with friends.

Whether it’s helping residents who attend our Chiropractic Clinic, working with exciting initiatives and startups or learning first hand from nearby NHS Trusts, what you need to succeed is all within reach. And with dedicated support and resources, informal study spaces and digitally focused teaching rooms, we’ll give you the best student experience.

TRAVEL IS EASY

We’re just a 5-10-minute walk from both East and West Croydon overground stations and just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. London is on our doorstep with trains from London Bridge and London Victoria around £13 a day. Alternatively, you can use the bus or tram network for £5 a day, with many routes stopping outside campus!

We have a great campus café but there are also plenty of local coffee shops and places to eat nearby where you can catch up with friends if you wanted to head out.

Be sure to taste flavours from all over the world at Boxpark Croydon, just a 5-minute walk from campus. It has a buzzing atmosphere and also hosts a variety of activities including karaoke, sports screenings, quiz nights and even axe throwing!

GREEN SPACES

A 15-minute walk from campus, take a lunchtime stroll with friends through the 21-acre Wandle Park. Where better to chill on a sunny afternoon? It also hosts Croydon Pridefest in the summer which is the second largest Pride festival in London!

BE PART OF A WIDER COMMUNITY

Studying with LSBU means you can also take advantage of our LSBU Hub and facilities at our Southwark campus, complete with plenty of social and learning spaces, and just 20/30 minutes away. You can join our on-campus gym with free off-peak membership and find your people at one of our many sports clubs and societies.

Located in East London and has its own local identity shaped by a community of nursing students, so if you’re studying here, you’ll be surrounded by like-minded peers. Our campus is complete with nursing skills labs, modern teaching and social spaces, café, and library. Away from the hustle and bustle, but great travel links into the city, our campus offers a warm, welcoming, and friendly environment with a close-knit community – a perfect setting for health courses.

You’ll graduate with confidence because you won’t just learn on campus, you’ll get hands on and work in nearby professional settings, such as Barking Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust and North East London Foundation Trust, gaining invaluable skills and putting what you learn into practice.

GETTING TO HAVERING

The  Elizabeth line connects Havering to central London by tube, making travel easy in and around London. We’re just a 10-minute walk Harold Wood Train Station with trains running frequently from central London overground and tube stations such as Liverpool Street (for around £16 a day) and Stratford Station (for around £9 a day). Taking the bus? We have plenty of bus routes stopping just around the corner from our campus, in St. Clements Lane and at Harold Wood Station.

EXPLORE THE AREA

Head into the city to Tottenham Court Road in approx. 30 minutes, and explore the world- famous Soho, Convent Garden and Leicester Square. Take your pick of the West End musicals and plays or enjoy the live music, secret bars, restaurants, and shops.

You can also hop on a train to Brentwood or Romford for around £8 and arrive in less than 10 minutes. There are tons of pubs, bars, and nightclubs, all with Happy Hours and student deals.
