Ruth Coakley specialises in primary science with interests in assessment and outdoor learning. Ruth is currently working in the Department of Education in the School of Law and Social Sciences. She specialises in primary science and is responsible this year for teaching on the module for Primary Science and Computing module on the PGCE at London Southbank University.
Ruth will also be developing a Masters module in Enquiry Based Science in the Autumn Term as well as teaching on other aspects of the Postgraduate and Undergraduate programmes.
She is a former primary school teacher. Ruth taught for 7 years in primary school before being seconded to Cardiff Metropolitan where she was responsible for teaching primary science to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Her expertise lies across the curriculum from 3-11 year olds.
Ruth is also Forest School trained and helped develop the Forest School Programme at Cardiff Metropolitan for the undergraduate Educational Studies and Early Years students. Ruth taught at Cardiff Metropolitan for 7 years before accepting the position at LSBU as a Senior Lecturer.
In her previous role Ruth Coakley worked as part of the TAPS Cymru team at Cardiff Metropolitan University in collaboration with Bath Spa University. This research project was based on three years of studying assessment practice in primary schools in England by Bath Spa University, and resulted in the development of the TAPS Pyramid, a self-evaluation of assessment pyramid for primary schools. The TAPS Cymru team included six Welsh partner schools as well as other associate schools that worked collaboratively to produce a shared understanding of good practice in assessment in Wales. Ruth will continue her involvement in this research project in her new role at LSBU presenting her work alongside Cardiff Met and Bath Spa at the ASE Conference in January. Ruth also has a Masters in Education that focused on the development of Dialogic Talk in Primary Science.
Rurh Coakley has spent the last three years as the Welsh Representative for the UK Primary Association of Science Education. Her new role in England means she must relinquish tis position in November but she will retain her membership and activity within the organisation.
Ruth Coakley introduced two Primary Science Quality Mark hubs in Wales whilst working at Cardiff Metropolitan. Ruth has a commitment to supporting schools raise standards in primary science and plans to continue this work in her new role at LSBU. Ruth has also worked alongside colleagues in her previous role at Cardiff Metropolitan to develop training materials in Education for Welsh Government.
