Ruth came to education as a second career some 10 years ago when she enrolled for a Higher Education Diploma at the then Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, South Africa. Using digital technologies as a teaching tool captured her imagination and, in 2005, she graduated from the same university, now the University of Johannesburg, with a Master's degree in the field.

Since 2004, Ruth has worked at London South Bank University as an Academic Developer in the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Unit. Her work encompasses working at all levels in the institution, and with groups of academic colleagues, as well as individuals, as they seek to enhance their students' learning experience and their own scholarly activity. She has managed several projects in the field of eLearning, including the University's Compass Pathfinder Project, and currently collaborate with colleagues from the Open University and other institutions in a JISC Curriculum Design project.
