Sessional Lecturer


Miguel is an expert in tourism marketing and entrepreneurship and lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, alongside providing external consultancy on tourism development projects.

Miguel has a BEng and a MEng in Civil Engineering, followed by an MBA at Wharton School/Universidade Nova. In 1990 he attended the Advanced Executive Program at Kellogg’s Business School, Northwestern University in Chicago where he studied marketing. In 2011 he achieved another master’s degree in Tourism Management at Westminster University. He is currently finishing his PhD at London South Bank University in Tourism Consumer Behaviour and Second Homes.

Miguel’s professional life started as a structural engineer in one of the biggest industrial groups in Portugal, responsible for project management of bridges, ship repair yards, airports and silos.

He then joined the world biggest valuation consulting company – American Appraisal Associates – firstly as Managing Director of the Portuguese subsidiary and afterwards as Director of the French subsidiary and Director for the International Operations.

His next position was with PHIMO and PHIMO AVALIACAO where he worked on the design and strategy of real estate investments and company asset valuation. Miguel was also a consultant to the Minister of Housing and Public Works of Portugal on changing legislation of rental housing contracts and promoting investment in this segment of the real estate market.

In 2009 Miguel started Innovation Box Holding in Cape Verde, of which he is still a Non-Executive Director, engaging in local tourism projects either by providing equity or by designing and developing the projects through Private Placement Property Funds. Since 2000 he has also lectured at several universities in Portugal and in the UK.

He was a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of Glyndwr University from 2009 to November 2014. In September 2015 he joined London South Bank University as a Sessional Lecturer.

Miguel has planned and taught modules on a range of business and marketing and tourism subjects. He brings his extensive industry experience to his teaching, ensuring that the academic programmes are industry-relevant and appeal to both national and international students.

Miguel has developed the course structures and syllabus for the BA (Hons) International Tourism Management at Glyndwr University, where he was also part of the validation committee, and several modules for BSc in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Anglia Ruskin University and for Open University/London College of International Business Studies. He also developed and was part of the validation committee of the BSc in Entrepreneurship.

At London South Bank University he teaches Business Enterprise Management preparing students to be able to develop their own business within the Tourism, Hospitality and Events sectors. He also teaches Destination Management and Current Issues in Tourism.

Miguel’s research interests are in second homes, tourist consumer behaviour, entrepreneurship and start-ups. He is particularly interested in the sharing economy and how it affects the development of new businesses in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

He is currently finishing his PhD at London South Bank University in Tourism Consumer Behaviour and Second Homes. His research is centred on the concept of “Sense of Second Home” as opposed to Sense of Home.
