Janet Parker is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy within the Division of Allied Health Sciences, School of Health and Social Care. She is a qualified Occupational Therapist and Access Consultant, and has worked predominantly in the areas of health and social care. Her particular areas of interest include housing and the impact of our environment on occupational performance.

Her clinical experience is in the UK, initially within the NHS in acute and older persons’ services followed by a number of years working in adult social care both for Unitary and County Councils. Following her MSc in Inclusive Environments she worked within the field of access focusing on the removal of barriers, promoting inclusive design and enabling participation. In 2003 she set up Parker Knight Associates, a company delivering both occupational therapy services and access consultancy to a wide range of clients both in the public and commercial sectors. She joined LSBU in 2009.

Janet currently teaches across both undergraduate and postgraduate Occupational Therapy programmes covering levels 4-7. She also delivers CPPD study days and teaches on CPPD modules. She has completed her PGCHE and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

She has introduced to the curriculum an internet based tool for designing housing adaptations, ensuring students are kept up to date with innovations in practice. She was highly commended for achieving the greatest student benefit in the Vice Chancellor’s Enterprising staff award as well as being nominated in 2016 for the Outstanding Lecturer in the Celebrating Excellence in Education Awards hosted by the LSBU Students' Union.

She is a moving and handling trainer providing mandatory training sessions to students.

Janet has a range of interests from bathing to bariatrics to the design of housing and the built environment. She is currently working with colleagues on the OT project which is looking at attrition and retention across OT provision within London. During the last academic year Janet was successful in winning a bid from Tropical Health Educational Trust [THET] to build and strengthen Occupational Therapy provision in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Three successful exchange visits were completed and the partnership is continuing.

Janet has worked on a Knowledge Transfer partnership [KTP] as an Academic Supervisor with Alzheimers UK looking at the development of an evaluation tool. She was also a member of the University of Reading research team working on behalf of the Government looking at new dwellings post-1999. This study considered whether current housing was meeting accessibility standards and occupant needs.
