In the community
Transforming lives, communities and businesses for over 125 years
Since we began in 1892, we have been dedicated to serving our local community, creating partnerships and forging new opportunities with the people of Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham.
From helping young people develop their skills, to providing businesses and communities with advice and guidance, supporting our local community is at the heart of what we do.
We support anyone with the potential to study at university level, whether you have family commitments, disabilities, were in care or are simply the first person in your family to go to university. Find out more on our widening participation page.
We also partner with local colleges and schools to introduce people to the exciting opportunities available with a university qualification.
Through free events, support services and access to our facilities, we are dedicated to being a valued and supportive member of our community:
- We offer free legal advice to the public through our Legal Advice Clinic
- Local residents can use our sports facilities through discounted access to our Academy of Sport and accredited childcare programmes during school holidays
- Our academics do research into issues that affect our local area such as community cohesion and household energy use
- Every year we invite representatives of the local community and local organisations to our Friends of LSBU event, where they can share their work and discuss how the University can support them. For more information contact Director of Corporate Affairs Michael Simmons on 020 7815 6042 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
We've established a family of like-minded specialist education providers from the local area, offering learners the opportunity to transfer between technical, vocational and academic pathways.
We’re supporting local businesses to grow and develop with help from our students and academics and access to our equipment and testing facilities.
Through our Business Solutions Centre local businesses can get free advice from our students on subjects ranging from accounting to social media. Our EU-funded projects are helping local companies create jobs and bring products to market, such as innovative low carbon technologies.
