As part of a series of research seminars hosted by ACI, Dr Dominic Dean and the S.P.A.C.E research group explore representations of young male migrants in literature and cinema

How does British paranoia of migrants and refugees living in conditions of severe deprivation relate to attitudes towards wealthy young male MENA migrants in London, whose presence also attracts a paranoid, but conflicted, media reception?

This seminar explores representations of young male migrants in literature and cinema (looking particularly at the work of Alan Hollinghurst (The Line of Beauty (2006; BBC adaptation of Hollinghurst’s 2004 novel) and Sally El Hosaini (My Beautiful Laundrette (1985); My Brother the Devil (2012) and will provide a route into the psychoanalytic elements of British political anxiety and paranoia towards Middle Eastern and North African migrants and refugees.
