Beyond the Console

An engaging two day conference for everyone who enjoys creating, producing and sharing the experience of playing interactive stories and games

This two day conference, organised by The Centre for Research in Digital Storymaking at London South Bank University, brings together creative practitioners, academics and indies to explore gender in narrative games. This is partly in celebration of the V&A’s exhibition Videogames: Design/Play.

Programme

Friday 8 February - V&A, Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL

  • Registration
  • Keynote game by Porpentine with introduction and chaired by Emily Short
  • Videogame Exhibition

Saturday, 9 February - London South Bank University, London Road Building, London Road, SE1 6LN

  • Panels on gender and game space; player agency and identity;
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Panels on gender, indies and industry
  • Keynote by Hannah Wood
  • Drinks reception

Games are made with binary code, humans not so much. By thinking about gender and play - who creates stories, what kind of spaces do we need  – we can imagine new possibilities, new agencies.  This conference will open with a specially commisioned interactive keynote game by renowned videogame artist Porpentine, introduced by Emily Short. Porpentine's keynote game event will be held at the V&A, who have also generously supported special entry tickets to the Videogame Exhibition for conference delegates for the Friday late opening.

On Saturday, we will be based in Elephant Studios, London South Bank University, for a day of panel presentations, interactive demonstrations, and discussions. Our keynote speaker is interactive artist and scholar Hannah Wood. The day will conclude with a drinks reception.

Ticket price covers both days and includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day. For more information about the conference, please click here.
