LSBU awarded 'first degree' in Green League

Posted: 17 June 2011

LSBU achieved a 'first class degree' in the 2011 People & Planet Green League. The Green League assessed 142 universities nationwide on 13 criteria to measure their commitment to environmental and ethical initiatives. LSBU was ranked as the fourth greenest University in London and 28th in the UK.

It was the only London university to get full marks for the 'Curriculum' and 'Environmental Auditing and Management Systems' criteria.

The 'Curriculum' measure assesses how a university incorporates sustainability into all its teaching and research. Top marks were also awarded for the 'Environmental Auditing and Management Systems' criteria, as LSBU proved it had successfully monitored all sustainability procedures including waste management, transport, energy, water, biodiversity, and procurement.

Anuj Saush, LSBU's Energy & Environment Manager, said: "We are very proud to have achieved a 'first class' ranking for our environmental commitment in this year's People & Planet Green League.

"LSBU will continue to work hard to build on our reputation as one of the greenest universities in the capital." People & Planet's Green League is the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance. It is compiled annually by the UK's largest student campaigning network, People & Planet.

LSBU receives ISO 14001 certification

Posted: 14 March 2011

LSBU has been awarded ISO 14001 certification after it implemented and demonstrated a university-wide environmental management system.

ISO 14001 is an international standard that provides a framework for organisations to control and improve their environmental performance. It provides both a model for streamlining environmental management and guidelines to ensure that environmental issues are considered within all decision making practices.

LSBU attained the accreditation after a series of audits by Certification Europe at its Southwark Campus. It is our intention to include Havering in our scope in 2012. The certification covers academic and support activities including facilities management, procurement, energy consumption, water, cleaning, waste management and the incorporation of environmental education in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Stephen Wells, Director of Estates and Facilities said, "W e are really pleased to have achieved ISO 14001. The certification confirms the continuous progress that the LSBU has achieved over the last few years in its commitment to environmental improvement."

The Energy and Environment Team, Anuj Saush and Kerry Horvath, would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the system and hope that the university can build upon this achievement to become even more environmentally sustainable in the future.

Staying cool and reducing CO2 in South Africa

Posted: 15 November 2010

Ina Colombo, PhD research student from LSBU's Centre for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, presented a research paper about Carbon Dioxide (R744) refrigeration at the Frigair Expo and Workshop* in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA).

The paper demonstrated how to reduce CO2 emissions in retail food by using novel refrigeration systems. Audience members at the event, hosted by the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, were particularly interested as CO2 refrigeration is new to the SA industry especially for commercial refrigeration. The editors for The Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Contractors Alliance and Cold Link made a request to publish the research paper in their publications.

Ina also presented at the refrigeration and air-conditioning research centre of Witwatersrand University. There was discussion of a possible collaboration between LSBU and the University of Witwatersrand

"I really enjoyed my trip in South Africa," said Ina, "there is some scope for knowledge transfer about alternative refrigerant technologies with the exchange of visits between LSBU and Wits University."

*The Frigair Expo and Workshop is Africa's only dedicated heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration exhibition. This year it was held from 8-11 September in Johannesburg Expo Centre in South Africa.

LSBU takes part in PEG Project

Posted: 02 November 2010

LSBU is partnering in the Printing Efficiently and Greener (PEG) project together with The University of East London and the award winning charity, Global Action Plan.

This unique project aims to give an insight to new ways of working and reducing the environmental impact of printing and documented related functions such as, scanning, faxing and photocopying, by using multifunctional devices and on-line services that replace up to four separate devices around the campuses.

The new multifunctional devices will use information computer based technology, audit systems and new management protocols, to replace install and benchmark a standard of management information which is being used by and at the University of East London.

At LSBU we will use the information and learning gathered in the project in our next tender, and business processes to produce a greener printing and document strategy across the University.  This will help to reduce costs and reduce our carbon footprint.
