Risk factors in diabetes
This trial was conducted to assess whether bromelain ( a pineapple enzyme) could affect risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease.
Particularly whether the dietary supplement (bromelain) had the potential to reduce plasma fibrinogen as well as other associated risks.
The systematic review carried out on the literature on bromelain informed a randomized Controlled Trial (RCT), which was carried out in Beijing. The research was also part of a postgraduate project and is currently being written up for publication.
The project commenced in 2010 and was completed in 2013. It has been carried out by academics from our School of Health and Social Care who are carrying out research under the theme of Health and Social Care Delivery. The systematic review has been published in the Journal of Chinese Integrative Medicine 2011; 9(7):702-710.
The funding body for this project is The Lee Foundation, Malaysia.
Collaborators on the project include: Professor Ni Qing, Guanan Men's Hospital, China Academy of Medical Science, Beijing.
