Prince Amoako, MEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Following in his uncle's footsteps, Prince is well on his way to becoming a chartered engineer and fulfilling his dream of working in the power industry
For Prince Amoako, a career in electrical and electronics engineering was always on the cards – he had studied an HND in electrical and electronics engineering – but as a Ghanaian national, his career took a back seat while he carried out his national service.
“I’d been working as a contractor before I was called up,” says Prince. “I planned to do an apprenticeship, and had an interest in everything electrical. I think it’s down to an uncle of mine who was an electrical engineer, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps.”
After carrying out his Army service, Prince began thinking about studying at university. He made contact with several options, with LSBU on his shortlist thanks to positive reviews from friends of his who were students there.
What really made me consider LSBU as my first choice was that Dr Steve Alty, the Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, contacted me directly. It made me feel welcome and supported, and his professionalism really impressed me.
Since enrolling on the course, Prince has been impressed by the practical nature of his studies, something that is new to him as a student. “In Africa, I studied purely electrical skills, but at LSBU I have learned to design in 2D and 3D, and am even capable of using other software like Matlab, which is very different,” he says. “It’s a big step between HND and degree level but it’s been very rewarding so far.”
It’s those practical skills that Prince believes will give him the edge when it comes to finding employment. “I really want to find work in the power industry, with the aim of becoming a Chartered Engineer,” he says. “That’s why I’m taking the MEng route, as it will get me there quicker. I’m also interested in the possibility of a PhD if I get the right grades and can secure some sponsorship.”
