Maros Takac, BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology, international student
Maros wrote his name into the history books at his college for his super attendance and academic recordThis led to him being featured in a popular Slovakian newspaper. His strong academic performance began in primary school and continued through to LSBU where he studied BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology to advance his career, winning student of the year on his course along the way.
Excellent academic record
After developing his career at firms such as IBM and Condé Nast, Maros wanted to increase his job security and improve his prospects for the future. Given his passion for learning and academia, returning to study seemed a logical option.
Deciding to study at LSBU due to the convenient location and the interesting structure of the course, Maros thrived on the course with its exceptional facilities and helpful tutors. He picked out lecturers Paul Carden, Philip Campbell and George Ubakanma in particular for praise. "This means, along with having students from all over the world studying at LSBU, the atmosphere is still relaxed."
Developing passion
It was after moving to England that Maros really began to develop his passion for IT. Initially leaving university in Slovakia because he could not get to grips with programming, over time Maros began to understand IT far better.
His interest in IT started at a young age, as a 17 year-old he was involved in organising public events for car enthusiasts. "I had my own club called Skodateam. To raise the awareness of it and attract as many visitors as possible, I ended up producing fliers in MS Word and later on in Corel Draw – my first serious contact with designing. We had our own pirate radio and a website which I wanted to take control over - that was a major turning point in my career and future. From there, I developed an interest in HTML, CSS etc."
The learning style of the course was perfectly suited for Maros, who learns theory best when it is absorbed with practical examples. The technical nature of certain units, such as development, web design and development, were his personal favourites.
Appealing to employers
Maros advises students, as well as studying hard, to take on extra projects outside university. "This can be a way to earn a bit of money, support yourself and develop your skills too." This attitude has paid dividends for Maros, who is now working as an ITSM Application Analyst/Service Now Developer at Informa Plc. He believes his degree at LSBU helped him stand out and help him secure this job: "a first-class degree made my CV look appealing to employers."
