Background

Fifteen years ago, the School of Engineering Systems and Design students built and raced pedal cars.

"You've come a long way baby!...."

Mad Dog, the solar powered car developed at South Bank University-London., takes its name from the famous Noel Coward song,

" Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun."

The team designs and builds solar powered racing cars to compete in international events such as the World Solar Rallye 1998 in Japan.

Solar powered cars are the only true zero emission vehicles in existence and the research into solar racing cars will eventually lead to efficient electric vehicles for the new millenium.

The team's first low budget solar car, Mad Dog 1, completed the most demanding and prestigious solar car race in the world, The 1996 World Solar Challenge, in Australia. The race took place along the Stuart Highway from Darwin to Adelaide. Under tough conditions Mad Dog I successfully finished the 3010 Km course, setting a new British Speed Record.
