Smart Internet Technologies (SuITE)

Fundamental and applied research in Smart Internet Technologies

The Smart Internet Technologies (SuITE) research group was formed in 2016 within the School of Engineering. It is closely associated with the Division of Computer Science and Informatics, and focuses on Smart Internet Technologies that address challenges relating to smart cities, digital healthcare, ambient assisted living, agriculture, public safety, disaster and emergency Management and education technologies.

SuITE conducts both fundamental and applied research in the fields of:

  • Open-based networking (5G, SDN, NFV, MEC, fog/mist computing)
  • Internet of Things
  • Media and content convergence
  • Augmented reality and virtual reality technologies
  • Advanced cloud computing infrastructures and services

5G experimental testbed

LSBU SuITE has designed and developed a 5G experimental testbed (PDF File 354 KB). The testbed considers a multi-tier architecture comprising of MEC and Fog instances and heterogeneous IoT to support multiple use case scenarios (Cloud-based CDN, Smart Cities).

PhD opportunities

  • Open Cloud-based Networking (5G, SDN, NFV, MEC/fog/mist computing, Cloudlet Orchestration, New virtualisation techniques, Content Delivery Networks)
  • Internet of Things (IoT Interoperability, IoT security, IoT and Fog Interworking)
  • Immersive Media (360 video, 4K and beyond, augmented reality technologies, QoE modeling, media optimisation, cloud-based media)

Our research students have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and testbeds for experimentation. They also actively participate in large-scale EU collaborative projects; this provides them with international research exposure and valuable opportunities to share knowledge with other researchers.
