To come to university students usually bring with them previous qualifications and we also want them to be able to demonstrate they have the necessary skills to successfully study as an undergraduate.
Our Admissions Tutors are looking to see evidence of your motivation, commitment, aptitude and potential. It is also essential that you can demonstrate a good standard of maths or numeracy, communication and IT, along with a sound knowledge and interest in the subject area to which you’re applying.
Some of our courses have additional and/or specific entry requirements. All details can be found in the profile of each course in our online prospectus.
Many of your previous qualifications will give you a score of UCAS Tariff points. Tariff points are awarded to all qualifications achieved at a level comparable to GCE A’ Level, BTEC National or the 14-19 Diplomas.

The system converts qualifications into points, e.g. a Merit Merit Merit in a BTEC National Diploma is worth 240 points. The points from each qualification are then added together to give a total that can be used to get you on a university course. Find out now what your qualifications equate to in UCAS Tariff points.
Please note there are revised entry tariffs for some undergraduate courses commencing in September 2011. Up to date entry tariff information can be found on our online course search.
These qualifications are designed to give an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a particular subject, developing abilities and problem-solving skills as well as practical learning.
As an alternative to traditional academic degrees, Foundation degrees are designed and delivered in partnership with employers to mix academic study with workplace learning. They equip people with the relevant knowledge, understanding and skills to improve their performance and productivity.
For students already in full-time employment Foundation degrees give them the opportunity to continue their professional development within their chosen career whilst continuing to work. You don’t necessarily need traditional academic qualifications to gain entry. Successful students often progress to a one-year ‘top up’ Honours Degree.
Higher National Certificates/Diplomas (HNCs/HNDs) are designed specifically to provide a skills/career based qualification. These vocational qualifications also provide a route onto our Honours degree programmes.
This degree programme includes a year of study that ensures students have underpinning knowledge and skills before they progress onto more specialist studies in the later years of the course. It’s an ideal entry route for students with few, or no, formal qualifications who are returning to education. It is also a good option for students who do not have the required subjects/grades at A Level (or equivalent) to be able to progress onto a Degree or Foundation Degree programme.
All school leavers without the appropriate subjects at Level 3 to be able to follow their chosen course of study would also be suitable for these courses.
We also have been part of a team of universities that have led the development of 14-19 Diplomas.
We offer specialised support to any students who attend LSBU with a background of being in care. Read our online details for Care Leavers.
We take into consideration all the information given on our application form, or produced at an interview, when making a decision about whether to make an offer. This includes your past academic performance, predicted grades, personal statements, tutor's preferences and any other evidence of skills, aptitude and potential.
When we write to you offering you a place it may be a Conditional Offer. This means that you will be asked to achieve particular grades in certain subjects to secure your place. If, when you receive your results, you have not quite achieved the requested grades, you should contact us as you may still have a place at university. If there are any places left on the course at this time your place may be reconsidered. Call our Course Enquiries Team on freephone 0800 923 8888.
