Although applicants normally require a first degree (usually at least a 2:2) or a Higher National Diploma in a relevant subject and a minimum of three years post-qualification experience in a relevant field to undertake postgraduate study here we recognise that many people have a wealth of valuable skills and knowledge they've developed at work or through training. If you have the potential to succeed in postgraduate or post-experience studies we'll consider your application on its individual merits.
Our Admissions Tutors are looking for motivated and committed students. It is essential that our postgraduate candidates have achieved good standards in maths or numeracy, communication and IT. You will also need to demonstrate a good knowledge and interest in the subject area you're applying for.
To register for a MPhil degree or a MPhil with the possibility of transferring to a PhD you'll normally need a first or second class Honours degree from a recognised university. Direct registration for a PhD is possible but it is normally restricted to holders of a relevant Masters degree.
"I'm at LSBU because of the reputation of their product design courses, the facilities and location."
Ronald Thompson, MSc Enterprise Business Project
If you have another qualification you'll be considered on your merits and we'll take into account the nature and scope of the programme of work you're proposing. We also recognise professional experience, publications, reports and other evidence of accomplishment as well as an ability and background knowledge appropriate to the proposed research.
Candidates are required to possess the required English language skills to undertake their programme of work and also to prepare and defend a thesis. As a research student your application needs to be accepted by one of our four faculties and this can only be done once an appropriate supervisory team has been identified.
We offer specialised support to any students who attend LSBU with a background of being in care. Read our online details for Care Leavers.
For Postgraduate Diploma and Masters courses the normal entry qualification is an Honours degree or equivalent. For some Postgraduate Diplomas alternative qualifications are accepted along with relevant work experience. The University considers each application on its merits and is prepared to admit candidates who can demonstrate they have reached the normal entry requirements on the basis of prior experiential learning.
For some courses additional entry requirements are required and all of these details can be found in the course profile in our prospectus. Post-experience courses have specific entry requirements and candidates should consult the relevant course entry and Course Director.
