Simon Meeson, a second year BA (Hons) Drama and Performance Studies student at London South Bank University (LSBU), carried the Olympic Flame on Wednesday 18 July in Hastings.
Simon, who is 20, suffers from Cowden's Syndrome, a rare genetic condition which is characterised by multiple tumour-like growths which can become cancerous.
Over the years, Simon has endured many complications and setbacks due to his condition. Currently he has four different tumours in his feet and ankle which cause him great pain and he often needs to use crutches to walk.
Earlier this year Simon underwent major surgery, although this hasn't stopped him from continuing with his degree and doing the things that he loves.
Simon explains: "I had major surgery over Easter this year and then came straight back to university three weeks later, not missing one day, when I should of been off for three months."
Commenting on Simon's opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch, Gill Foster, Course Director for Drama and Performance studies at LSBU, said: "We are very pleased and excited that Simon's huge achievements have been recognised in this way.
"Simon is an exceptional young man who has battled against illness with fortitude and courage for a long time. I have seen him working as hard as anyone in the rehearsal room, knowing that he is in pain and yet still able to make jokes and support others while he works.
"He seems an entirely fitting choice for the role of torch bearer which means that he can be a source of inspiration to even more people as he has been for the staff and students at LSBU."
On having the opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame, Simon said: "Carrying the torch is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you were to see me on the street you might think 'Oh, there's nothing wrong with him', but I go through a lot and I fight it.
"I have had to battle all these problems and issues and this is something good to come out of it which is really nice."
In addition to taking part in Olympic Torch Relay, Simon is also involved with the Olympic celebrations in Hastings where he will be performing with the Hastings Stage Studio.
More information about Simon can be found on the official Olympic Torch Relay website.
