A London South Bank University (LSBU) student has scooped the top prize in a chemical engineering research competition run by the industry's global professional body.
Mohammed Misbahu Ladan's groundbreaking research could provide a greener and more sustainable process to produce epoxides - a raw material that creates everyday products like medicine, plastic and paint.
The new process centres on using highly stable and reusable catalysts to make the production of epoxides cheaper, more environmentally friendly, safer and more flexible - and has great potential in industrial applications.
Mohammed won a national event run by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) which looked at current research in fluid separation processes.
Basu Saha, Professor of Chemical and Process Engineering at LSBU, said: "This is the first time an LSBU PhD student has received first prize at an IChemE research event.
"Mohammed's outstanding performance has once again demonstrated the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Built Environment's provision of state-of-the-art facilities for research work that benefits both industry and society."
Mohammed, who is currently studying his PhD in Chemical Engineering, was praised by a panel of judges from both industry and academia for his presentation and its technical content - and received £400 as the winner of the competition, beating nine other researchers.
