Industry leaders share advice at Marketing Careers Evening

Leading industry figures in the marketing field - including alumni from London South Bank University - shared best practice at an inspiring event hosted by the institution.

Networking during a Marketing Careers Evening at LSBU

They gave top tips on how to carve out a successful career in the industry including the need for focus, flexibility, innovation, experience, drive and passion.

Past and present students who attended the University's annual Marketing Careers Evening were given a platform to discuss career paths and specialty niches with leading industry figures directly - an opportunity very few are granted in today's climate.

Around 200 people attended the event, now in its seventh year, where they heard from LSBU alumnus Ryan Whelan, who graduated in 2005, and now works for global marketing giant Edelman.

Robert Wint, Head of Digital Marketing at Barclays, discussed the phenomenon of social media and the important role it plays in engaging with current and potential customers today.

He later Tweeted: "Some impressive alumni in great roles. Hope the current crop get good jobs."

LSBU alumni, now professionals working in organisations including ad agencies, banks and dotcoms, held a Q&A session - and praised the LSBU Marketing Alumni Network for playing an integral role in helping them to strive for the very best in their careers.

LSBU Marketing Alumni Network member Heather Johnstone told attendees: "This network is your best network."

The audience was also informed of the Marketing Department's wider successes, including:

*Being voted the best university in London for marketing courses and recognised as 13th highest in the country, according to the Student Survey

*Senior Lecturer Beverly Barker being named 'Educator of the year' by the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing

*Dr John Egan, Director of Marketing and Communications, becoming the new Chair of the Academy of Marketing.

Mel Godfrey, Course Director for the MA Marketing at LSBU, said: "This is an invaluable event for our current and former students, representing an excellent opportunity to share best practice, gain insights into emerging ways of thinking in the discipline and to network - which can be a springboard for future career openings.

"Our alumni rise quickly in the marketing industry to managerial positions. They consistently help us find jobs for our current students, and with their continued commitment to LSBU, each year this event grows.

"As many of the alumni have said, networking is the key in this tough employment environment, and we are proud at LSBU to be able to provide an excellent network between our alumni who are now employers and our student body. This all helps students get their foot on the employment ladder quickly."
