Anatomy TV [electronic resource].
Interactive 3D model of human anatomy.

Core E-resources

These databases index a lot of journals and should be used for a comprehensive search. The library does not subscribe to all the journals covered, so you will not be able to obtain all the articles you find from us. Check the title of the journal in the library catalogue to see if it is available.

British Nursing Index (BNI) [electronic resource].
Provides references to journal articles, some conference papers and major reports on aspects of education and training, from the UK and some English language international titles. Starts in 1976 and covers all levels and ages.

CINAHL [electronic resource].
Cinahl indexes over 1600 nursing and allied health journals, and has an international coverage. It is updated weekly. This is the best database to use for an in-depth search, although we do not have access to all the journals covered.

Medline - via EBSCO [electronic resource].
The US National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database of over 16 million references from more than 5,000 biomedical journals published in the United States and 80 other countries. Subject coverage is from the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences, and is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts. Records date from the 1950's onwards, many include abstracts. The database includes links to some full text articles, but this is not a full text database.

Full Text Journal Collections

You can use these databases to find articles which are available online. You should not use them for a serious research project, as they do not have the wide coverage of databases like Cinahl. They are good when you want to do a quick, straightforward search.

Academic Onefile [electronic resource].
Academic OneFile is the premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995. Updated daily.

BioMed Central [electronic resource].
An independent publishing house providing free access to peer reviewed biomedical literature. It publishes over 50 on-line journals and also hosts affiliated journals.

Internurse [electronic resource].
Internurse.com is a Web site set up by the Mark Allan Publishing Group. It includes a searchable archive, to which we subscribe, of thousands of peer reviewed articles from British Journal of Nursing, British Journal of Midwifery etc

ScienceDirect (Science Direct) [electronic resource].
Database containing over 1000 full text journals from Elsevier Science and the leading scientific, technical and medical publishers. Covers life, physical, technical and social sciences.

Remember that not all articles is the ScienceDirect database are available to us.

Your Journals@Ovid [electronic resource].
Via Ovid. Access to databases and full text for the Healthcare and Academic communities.

Evidence-Based Health Care

You can search these e-resources to find systematic reviews, and other evidence-based research.

Bandolier
Not a database, but an online journal, Bandolier supplies summaries of evidence-based reviews.

Centre for Reviews and Dissemination [electronic resource].
CRD produces and promotes the use of research based knowledge in health and social care. It enables you to search the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), the NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) and the Health Technology Assessments database (HTA). It does not contain Cochrane Reviews - for this use the Cochrane Library.

Cochrane Library [electronic resource].
The Cochrane Library is designed to supply high quality evidence to inform health care decision-making.

Trip: Turning Research into Practice [electronic resource].
A meta search engine searching over 50 sites of high quality medical information many of which are acknowledged evidence based sites, also articles from key journals. Search results indicate types of site found.

 

Background E-resources

These are databases from other subject areas which may be worth searching if they are relevant to your query. They may include journals to which we do not subscribe, so remember to check the title in the library catalogue.

AMED Allied and Complementary Medicine Database [electronic resource].
Via Ovid. Key areas covered are complementary medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation.

HMIC Health Management (formerly Helmis) [electronic resource].
Via Ovid. Combines databases of Department of Health from 1983, Kings Fund from 1979 and Nuffield Institute for Health (HELMIS) from 1984 to provide comprehensive research.

Maternity & Infant Care [electronic resource].
Contains over 120,000 references. Included are abstracts from over 550 international English language journals, books, and grey literature. Topics include the midwifery profession, pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal care, neonatal care and the first year of an infants life. Database coverage is from the mid 1980s onwards and approximately 1000 records are added to the database per month. The database also includes correspondence and commentary written in response to an article.

OTDBASE [electronic resource].
Occupational therapy journal database of thousands of searchable abstracts from over 20 OT journals.

Psycarticles [electronic resource].
Via EBSCOhost databases. PsycARTICLES, from the American Psychological Association (APA), is a definitive source of full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. The database contains more than 134,000 articles from 63 journals - 50 published by the APA and its imprint, the Educational Publishing Foundation (EPF) - and 13 from allied organisations. It includes all journal articles and book reviews. Coverage spans 1894 to present.

Psycinfo [electronic resource].
Via EBSCOhost databases. From 1974. Includes details of articles with abstracts from over 1300 psychology journals, from 1974.

Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection [electronic resource].
Via EBSCOhost databases. Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection is a comprehensive database covering information concerning topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational & experimental methods. Has more than 420 full-text journals. Also links to full text from citations within PsycINFO.

Social Care Online [electronic resource].
Social Care Online is the UK's most extensive database of social care information. With everything from research briefings, to reports, government documents, journal articles, and websites and you find it all with the click of a button. Updated daily by SCIE's experienced information managers, Social Care Online offers unrivalled free access and ease of use.

Indexes of Newspapers

ProQuest Newspapers, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, Guardian, Independent, Times [electronic resource].
Updated daily. Database of the Daily Mail & Mail on Sunday; Daily Telegraph & Sunday Telegraph; Evening Standard; Financial Times; Guardian & Observer; Times and Sunday Times; Independent. Coverage is from at least January 1998 onwards for all titles.

E-Books

Books@Ovid [electronic resource].
Books@Ovid platform with Made Incredibly Easy! which contains 38 e-books titles and Oxford Handbooks which contains 10 e-book titles.

British National Formulary (BNF) [electronic resource].
Requires free of charge one-time registration to access full text. Provides UK healthcare professionals with authoritative and practical information on the selection and clinical use of medicines.

MyiLibrary [electronic resource].
MyiLibrary provides a faster and easier way to access collections of books, reports, journals, bulletins and other documents published by inter-governmental organisations such as the World Bank, United Nations and International Labour Organisation.

Oxford Reference Online [electronic resource].
All major Oxford University Press reference works, including the Companions series, are searchable individually or across the whole database. Strong in the Humanities, Languages, Science and Medicine.

Referencing Resources

RefWorks [electronic resource].
RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

This is an Australian online resource providing evidence-based information about palliative care.

Department of Health

Internet for Nursing, Midwifery & Health Visiting

If you want to improve your searching skills on the Internet this online self-teaching tutorial is highly recommended. It provides guidance on different types of resources, different types of search tools and how to use them effectively, with plenty of specific examples. Quality issues and common pitfalls are also dealt with and a series of scenarios expand upon the practicalities of using the Internet productively.


Intute Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health gateway
A free online search engine which enables you to search evaluated web resources. Formerly NMAP. N.B. Site is very slow to load.


Just for Nurses
This commercial website includes British Nursing News, which gives summaries of current news items relevant to nursing with access to archives from 1999 onwards. A search facility is also available. (Free) registration is required.

Making Practice-based Learning Work

This project aims to enhance the quality of student experiences on placements. It gives access to free online materials which can be used by mentors and students.


NHS Evidence: Health Information Resources (formerly National Library for Health)

The NHS gateway to electronic resources. The search facility allows you to search the whole site. Much open-access material is available, but some requires an NHS Athens I.D. (Please ask your Information Adviser if you require further information).

Nurse-led clinics

This community site is aimed at nurses who wish to set up a nurse-led clinic It contains many information resources on the subject.

Nursing and Midwifery Council
In operation from April 2002 in place of the former UKCC and ENB. Its core function is to establish and improve standards of nursing, midwifery and health visiting care. Included in its activities are the maintenance of the professional register and setting standards and guidelines for education, practice and conduct.


Nursing Center
An American site, sponsored by 2 prominent nursing publishers. Gives access to some journals - but not full-text. Free registration is required.

Race Equality Foundation: Better health

This site contains a number of freely-available evidenced-based papers with the intention of promoting equality and preventing discrimination.

Royal College of Nursing
Information about RCN services and activities. Details of library services with access to the on-line catalogue and a separate list of journal holdings.

NSPCC inform: the online child protection resource
The Inform service enables you to register for current awareness services and receive the latest news on policy current practice and research, make virtual reference enquiries, access reading lists and information briefings and link to other online child protection resources. You will need to register on the site via the create your profile link.

Sure Start Children's Centres
A government inter-departmental initiative to tackle child poverty and social exclusion through establishment of local Sure Start programmes. The programme focuses on "the health and well-being of families and children before and from birth so children are ready to flourish when they go to school"..

UNICEF

The U.K. branch of the international organisation that promotes childrens' rights.

World Health Organization
Much of the work of WHO will impact on children's health in the global context and in particular the 'Healthy environment for children initiative'.

Mental Health

Institute of Psychiatry
Excellent links through to information on current research projects and recent research findings.

Internet Mental Health
Encyclopaedia of mental health information designed by a Canadian Psychiatrist. The emphasis is on the sharing of information for anyone interested in mental health.

The leading mental health charity in England and Wales. Their website includes many useful factsheets and booklets.

NHS Evidence - Mental Health
Formerly the Mental Healthl specialist library of the National Library for Health and a key initiative in the Mental Health Information Stratergy and National Service Framework for Mental Health. Information is focussed around particular topics e.g. depression, schizophrenia.
