Journal Databases

Below is a list of journal databases. Although they are all relevant to your subject area, you will find some are better for specific subjects than others:

Occupational Therapy: CINAHL, OTDBase, OTSeeker, ASSIA, PsycInfo.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography: Science Direct, SpringerLink, Medline.
Physiotherapy: CINAHL, Pedro, Sports Discus, AMED.
Operating Department Practice: CINAHL, Medline, ScienceDirect
Traditional Chinese Medicine: CINAHL, AMED, Medline, PsycInfo.


Please note that some articles will come in full text (e.g. in pdfs), but some are only available as abstracts. If there is no full text link in a database you need to do a journal title search on the library catalogue to find out whether we have it. For further help, please contact your Information Adviser.

AMED Allied and Complementary Medicine Database [electronic resource].
Via Ovid. Key areas covered are complementary medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation.

ASSIA [electronic resource].
ASSIA (Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts). Covers English language journals in applied social sciences. Includes health, economics, social issues & social policy, organisational behaviour and communication.

CINAHL [electronic resource].
Cinahl indexes over 1600 nursing and allied health journals, and has an international coverage. It is updated weekly. This is the best database to use for an in-depth search, although we do not have access to all the journals covered.

Medline - via EBSCO [electronic resource].
The US National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database of over 16 million references from more than 5,000 biomedical journals published in the United States and 80 other countries. Subject coverage is from the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences, and is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts. Records date from the 1950's onwards, many include abstracts. The database includes links to some full text articles, but this is not a full text database.

OTDBASE [electronic resource].
Occupational therapy journal database of thousands of searchable abstracts from over 20 OT journals.

OTSeeker
A database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy.

PEDro [electronic resource].
Physiotherapy Evidence Database. Provides details of randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy.

Psycinfo [electronic resource].
Via EBSCOhost databases. From 1974. Includes details of articles with abstracts from over 1300 psychology journals, from 1974.

ScienceDirect (Science Direct) [electronic resource].
Database containing over 1000 full text journals from Elsevier Science and the leading scientific, technical and medical publishers. Covers life, physical, technical and social sciences.

Sport Discus Database [electronic resource].
Via EBSCO. Coverage begins from 1975. International sports database covering exercise, physiology, medicine, biomechanics, coaching, counselling and sports medicine.

SpringerLink [electronic resource].
Provides online, full-text access to Springer's journal titles as well as journals from other publishers. Subjects include: life sciences, chemical sciences, environmental sciences, geosciences, computer science, mathematics, medicine, physics & astronomy, engineering and economics.

Anatomy Resource

Anatomy TV [electronic resource].
Interactive 3D model of human anatomy.

Evidence Based Health Care

Centre for Reviews and Dissemination [electronic resource].
CRD produces and promotes the use of research based knowledge in health and social care. It enables you to search the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), the NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) and the Health Technology Assessments database (HTA). It does not contain Cochrane Reviews - for this use the Cochrane Library.

Cochrane Library [electronic resource].
The Cochrane Library is designed to supply high quality evidence to inform health care decision-making.

Trip: Turning Research into Practice [electronic resource].
A meta search engine searching over 50 sites of high quality medical information many of which are acknowledged evidence based sites, also articles from key journals. Search results indicate types of site found.

E-Books

Books@Ovid [electronic resource].
Books@Ovid platform with Made Incredibly Easy! which contains 38 e-books titles and Oxford Handbooks which contains 10 e-book titles.

MyiLibrary [electronic resource].
MyiLibrary provides a faster and easier way to access collections of books, reports, journals, bulletins and other documents published by inter-governmental organisations such as the World Bank, United Nations and International Labour Organisation.

Newspapers

ProQuest Newspapers, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, Guardian, Independent, Times [electronic resource].
Updated daily. Database of the Daily Mail & Mail on Sunday; Daily Telegraph & Sunday Telegraph; Evening Standard; Financial Times; Guardian & Observer; Times and Sunday Times; Independent. Coverage is from at least January 1998 onwards for all titles.

Referencing Resources

RefWorks [electronic resource].
RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

The Health Professions' Council
Independent UK-wide body set up to regulate thirteen health professions allied to medicine, including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiographers and operating department practitioners.

Internet for Allied Health
A free, "teach yourself" tutorial that lets you practice your Internet information skills.

NMAP
NMAP is a free gateway to evaluated, quality Internet resources in nursing, midwifery and the allied health professions. Aimed at students, researchers, academics and practitioners it enables users to get quick and efficient access to reliable health information.

Centre for Health Economics, York University
Specialist health economics research unit within York University. 


Health Care Commission
The Commission's remit is to monitor and improve the quality of NHS services by means of clinical governance reviews. This site contains information on their work, as well as reviews and investigations to download.

DoH Chief Executive's Bulletin
Replaced by "The Week" is a weekly bulletin alerting chief executives to publications, circulars and announcements from the DoH

Health Economics Research Group - HERG (Brunel University)
Information about activities and a guide to health services research resources.

Institute of Healthcare Management

The largest UK professional body for individual managers working in health, with members working in the NHS, commercial organisations, management consultancies and in academia. Includes details of events and publications.

King's Fund

An independent charitable foundation working for better health, especially in London.  Information about the organisation, its current work, publications and links to other sites.

National Statistics
Official UK statistics site with a range of downloadable data. The site covers government data and "provides an up-to-date, comprehensive description of the UK's economy and society". You can also use the sites statbase to search for and access the datasets.

NHS Confederation
Wide range of up-to-date information for health service managers.

NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme
Broad view of health technology - includes devices, equipment, drugs, procedure. The Programme aims to address issues of effectiveness and cost effectiveness of interventions.

NLH Health Management (Specialist Library)
National Library for Health Specialist Library, providing access to information resources for health managers, clinical managers and leaders, and those involved in commissioning health services.

OT Direct

An independent site for Occupational Therapists, OT Assistants and OT students, produced by Occupational Therapists

OTSeeker

OTSeeker (Occupational Therapy Systematic Evaluation of Evidence) is a free internet evidence resource for occupational therapists, containing citations and abstracts of over 2500 systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy.

World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT)

The key international representative for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy around the world and the official international organisation for the promotion of Occupational Therapy.

Operating Department Practice

Association of Operating Department Practitioners

The professional body for operating department practitioners.

Association for Perioperative Practice

Incorporates the National Association of Theatre Nurses. UK independent professional organisation for registered nurses working in operating departments and associated sterile services.

Physiotherapy

Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy
Based at the School of Physiotherapy, University of Sydney. Hosts a range of activities including maintenance of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro).

Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
Professional body for physiotherapists in the UK, including a number of clinical interest and occupational groups.

Information on common conditions, treatments and a search facility.

British Institute of Radiology
A multidisciplinary learned society and registered charity whose aim is to forge links between medicine, science and industry to improve the detection and treatment of disease. The BIR is the oldest radiological society in the world.

Society of Radiographers

The Society of Radiographers represents more than 90 per cent of the diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers in the UK. It is responsible for their professional, educational, public and workplace interests.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Acupuncture

British Acupuncture Accreditation Council (BAAB)

BAAB validates courses in acupuncture in the U.K., and the site contains links to downloads of publications useful for the course.

British Acupuncture Council

The leading self-regulatory body for Acupuncture in the U.K. The site contains a useful section for healthcare professionals and a section on research.
