Finding journal articles

  • To find journal articles or conference proceedings in EE area:

go to E-resources, and do a keyword search on one of the databases (e.g. IEEExplore)

Please note that some articles will come in full text (e.g. in pdfs), but some are only available as abstracts. Some journals may also be available in full in one database but are only available as abstracts from another database supplier.

  • To find out if we have the full text of a specific journal article we are interested in:

we need to do a journal title (e.g. Computer Weekly, Journal of strategic information systems) search in the journals catalogue to see if the journal, the specific volume and issue is available from one of the database hosts. Please note that all IEEE titles are available via IEEExplore.

If we do not have it, we can get it for you via our Interlibrary Loan Service. Or you may want to visit other libraries which offer you access to their collections (See What if the book/journal is not available in this library below).

Finding e-books

The library subscribes to around 500 e-books in technology areas from different hosts (see above E-books databases) for students to access. There are three ways to access them:

  1. Search in the library catalogue just as you would for the print version. If an electronic version is available, the book title will be indicated by [electronic resource]. Click on "Access this e-book" in the record to access it with your LSBU username and password.

  2. Search in the E-books catalogue (a sub-set of the library catalogue).

  3. Go directly to individual e-book databases and browse the titles, or search among the contents.

What if the book/journal is not available in this library?

If the book or the journal article is not available from this library, you can

  1. get it via our Interlibrary loan service, there is a small charge for any successful request for students; or

  2. visit other libraries like The British Library, or the libraries within the M25 network to see if they have the item you are looking for.

For the British Library, you can apply for a Reader's Card at their admission counter (membership is free) with proofs of address and identity. Please see British Library Helpsheet for more information.

For other academic libraries, please check on the Sconul Access Scheme website to see if the library is a member institution. A member institution will indicate which band of library users can access their libraries to borrow books.

Band A Staff and research students
Band B Part time, distance learning and placement students (Full time undergraduate students will be given Reference Only access)
Band C Full time taught postgraduate students

Full time undergraduate students will be given Reference Only access to institutions which admit Band B users.

You can then apply for a Sconul Card from us to access those libraries which you want to visit. Membership is free.

Referencing help

1. Helpsheets:

- Numeric style
- Harvard style

Whatever style you use, please be CONSISTENT.

2. There are referencing tools available to help you manage your references:

RefWorks [electronic resource].
RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

Endnote Web: Available via ISI Web of Knowledge [electronic resource]
Endnote Web is available as part of the ISI Web of Knowledge subscription. Click My Endnote Web on the top after you login.

You can access it directly at http://www.myendnoteweb.com with your username and password after first registration.

Microsoft Word 2007

Microsoft Word 2007 has a bibliography function.

Open a word document:
Go to References > Insert Citations to insert new citations (or references) inside the text.
Go to References > Bibliography > Insert Bibliography to generate the list of references at the end.

Choosing your output style:
You need to choose an output style from References > Styles for your reference list. Harvard Style is not in the standard build of Word but additional styles which are close to LSBU Harvard styles can be imported from the web. There is one source which you may like to consider: http://bibword.codeplex.com/releases/view/15852 *. Please note that there is no exact match of LSBU Harvard style from the imported list. Small manual adjustment is still required.

*To import:
Under Recommended Download on the above webpage, click on styles.zip, I agree, Open, Extract all files then Browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Bibliography\Style.
Then click Extract. This will put all the additional styles into the correct folder on the desktop PC. When you open a Word document again, you will find the additional styles listed under References > Styles.

You are welcome to contact me if you need help in this area.
