Finding Subject Literature from Periodicals, Journals, Conferences, etc.

Primary literature (original articles from academic/professional journals. etc.) can be found from various secondary sources:

Printed Abstracts and Indexes.
Both Abstracts and Indexes refer one to the whereabouts of a particular piece of subject information. The ' Indexing' service merely lists the "finding details" or full reference to article. The 'Abstracting' service gives the full reference (author, title of article. title of periodical, date, volume, etc.) and an abstract or summary of the article.

Examples: -

HCIMA Bibliography of Hotel and Catering Management
Location: Abstracts and Indexes

European Access
Location: Abstracts and Indexes Collection EUR
Current awareness guide to the policies and activities of the European Union

Electronic Databases One can also find subject information from periodicals, conferences, etc. by using various Electronic Databases. The library subscribes to a number of electronic databases which give world-wide subject coverage and include

Hospitality and Tourism Index
Business Source Premier (Business, management, economics, marketing etc.
FAME (UK Company Financial Information)
Sociological Abstracts (Sociology)

The Electronic databases are available for independent, unlimited access. Most of the electronic databases provide full reference and an abstract or summary of the article. Some Electronic databases are full-text

Newspapers
Business Source Premier
European Business ASAP

Helpsheets for using these services are available. For a full list of suitable electronic databases/journals see E-Resources
Please note that many of these electronic databases/journals are available off campus.

See Library website for availability, helpsheet, etc.

Having found suitable subject references, one now has to decide whether to proceed with the particular subject reference. If the item is not in stock, then one can use the inter-library loan service. The details on loan forms are transmitted by a computer system to the British Library Document Supply Centre. Inter-library loans are not counted as part of one's normal loan allocation. A letter of notification is sent out when the loan is supplied.
