Volunteering

Why Volunteer?

Students and graduates from every course and every background can benefit greatly from undertaking voluntary work. In a difficult economic climate when jobs may be hard to find, having the addition of some unpaid experience on your CV that demonstrates your skills can make the difference between success and failure in the recruitment process.

How the Employability & Careers Service can help

Quick Query sessions are available every day and do not require an appointment. They are an opportunity to see a careers adviser for 15 minutes and are ideal for simple questions you may have about finding voluntary opportunities. They can also be used for CV checking. Times for quick query sessions can be found here.

Using our JobShop

The JobShop is an online vacancy service managed by the Employability & Careers Service which advertises vacancies for volunteering as well as graduate, placement and part time jobs. This system is updated on a daily basis and is therefore a useful tool for searching for opportunities.

To gain access to this service you must firstly have your CV checked by a Careers Adviser in a quick queries session. You will then be given the login details to register yourself on the system. Once registered you can view and apply for vacancies and set up email alerts to inform you of new vacancies that have been uploaded.

Your Rights as a Volunteer

Just because you do not have a contract of employment does not mean you have no rights within the work place. To find out more about what you should be expecting, click here to be taken to the Directgov website for up to date information on your rights.
