I strongly believe that every experience in life is what you make it. Having the opportunity to live in London and travel Europe for six months has been nothing short of amazing! Attending LSBU has been a great adventure, and one that I will always cherish. The wonder of the city mixed with the unique intellectuals I have become acquainted with during my time here has been a life changing experience.

Learning through internship

CAPA

We are delighted to announce a unique partnership between LSBU and CAPA International Education (CAPA). This means that students enrolling on our Study Abroad Programme can take advantage of an extensive network of internship sites through CAPA, offering internship placements for any major. To learn about specific placements for your major, e-mail: studyabroad@lsbu.ac.uk.

Internships are available in businesses of every kind, as well as non-profit and non-governmental organizations. You will be placed at sites within commuting distance that best meet your individual interests, abilities and academic background.

Starting an internship abroad in London

All internships depend upon a successful interview with the internship-host organisation, which will take place right after your arrival and orientation.

Internship students are required to participate in a seminar series entitled Learning through Internships. You will have mentors to ensure that you have academic guidance during your internship. You will produce papers, write reflective journals, and make oral presentations examining the real learning that occurs during your program. You will also produce a portfolio at the end of your internship that must meet clear academic criteria in order for you to attain credit for the internship.

In place of one or two of the four module choices, you can choose to participate in a three to six credit-hour internship in any major field of study at no additional cost.

For Further information about our internships and to request an application form please contact studyabroad@lsbu.ac.uk.

For a sample list of internships for select majors and related material visit CAPA.

The importance of self managed learning

Our overseas students find the academic system is often different in the UK. At LSBU students are expected to keep up with readings, course note reviews and attend class to ensure they understand the material they are being taught. There are also fewer quizzes and exams.

Because of this, it is important that you plan your work schedule in advance and use your time efficiently. Make effective notes by using key words, flow charts, diagrams, your own personal shorthand and review the material you’re given by re-reading lecture notes after each session.

Our lecturers are here to help and support your learning experience, but your private study and reading time is essential to your success. If you’ve got any questions, just ask. It’s important to us that you concentrate on your studies rather than worry about issues that can be resolved.

American football at LSBU

Spartans in action

American football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, with 85,000 local fans attending the NFL's annual appearance at London's Wembley Stadium.

LSBU's own team, the LSBU Spartans, gives our students the perfect opportunity to lace up their pads once again. The Spartans practice twice a week during each semester and it's a great way for you to brush up on your skills and meet others interested in the sport. As the game is still relatively new in Britain, American players can expect to be some of the best players on the field. Come relive the glory of your high school years while studying abroad at LSBU.

Be a volunteer

A unique part of the LSBU programme is the chance we give you to work in the community as a volunteer whilst earning course credit. Volunteering could involve anything from helping to clean-up local areas along the Thames, volunteering at events or working on some of London’s top sustainability projects. Students can take part in a weekly volunteer assignment, following coursework devised by one of our faculties.

You’ll give just four hours a week and a faculty leader will support your volunteering with theory and course readings throughout the semester. This is a great way to meet Londoners, understand the concepts of volunteering and earn credit.
