Children's Nursing

The Department of Children's Nursing at London South Bank University is one of the largest in the United Kingdom and is responsible for the design and delivery of a range of child and young people focused courses supporting a philosophy of lifelong learning for students and qualified nurses. We place strong emphasis on skills and competency development especially related to new clinical practices and on flexible, web supported learning. The staff in the department all have links with practice learning areas and the students and staff benefit from a number of joint appointments in a range of children's care settings, aswell as a tertiary children's hospital.

Our strengths

We are in the privileged position of being the key education provider for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust and several key children's service providers in London and Essex. The Clinical Professor in Children and Young People's Cancer Care influences scholarly activity throughout the department as well as developing a community for clinical and educational research across the many clinical specialities in child health. This places the science of nursing and both the development and use of evidence to inform clincal care, at the heart of our teaching.

Over 500 pre-registration students study diploma and degree level courses that lead to their professional Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). These courses are the foundation for continuing development in children's nursing and many qualified nurses study individual units as well as study days, degrees, masters degrees and Doctoral studies.
