Payment of fees

Different payment dates and arrangements apply depending on which type of student you are. See the category below that best describes you.

Self-funding and ELQ students

This section applies to undergraduate overseas students and our home/EU and overseas postgraduate students. Students with Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ) planning to study at LSBU may be charged a higher fee. Look up a course in our ELQ Checker to give you a provisional indication of the fee rate you will be charged based on qualifications you already hold.

Self funding students studying for a whole year (2 semesters) can choose to either pay in full or by an initial down payment followed by four equal instalments. If you pay in full you may be entitled to an early settlement discount.

When you enrol or re-enrol it is essential that you either:

  • pay the full fee plus any registration fee, or
  • pay the initial down payment of one third of the fee plus the full amount of any registration fee. (The remaining four instalments, amounting to a sixth of the fee each are due on the dates given below).

Full-time(non ELQ) Home and EU undergraduates

If you are a Home or EU student, applications for maintenance, tuition fee loans and other support should be made online to Student Finance England. If you are an EU student you can get further advice from the Student Finance Services European Team. The support you are entitled to will differ depending on whether you are eligible for the new or old package of student support. You will be sent a Financial Notification setting out your entitlements.

New students

You will be given the option to take out a loan for your tuition fees. You must tell Student Finance England as part of your application form how much Tuition Fee Loan you wish to borrow. Any amount you do not borrow is payable at your published enrolment session.

Some courses contain compulsory field trips. The cost of these is payable at enrolment in addition to your tuition fees. These extra costs cannot be covered by The Student Loans Company, either by Tuition Fee Grant or Loan.

Continuing students

Students who started between 2006-2007 and 2009-2010 (eligible for the new package of student support)

You will be given the option to take out a loan for your tuition fees. You must tell Student Finance England as part of your application form how much tuition fee loan you wish to borrow. Any amount you do not borrow is payable by your published re-enrolment dates.

Students who started before 2006-2007 (and those eligible for the old package of student support)

Means-testing will be carried out based on your income or that of your family, to determine how much help towards the tuition fee you are entitled to receive. This is known as the Grant for Tuition Fees.

You will be given the option to take out a loan for your tuition fees. You must tell Student Finance England as part of your application how much tuition fee loan you wish to borrow. Any amount that you do not borrow (or is not covered by your Tuition Fee Grant), is payable by the published re-enrolment dates.

Continuing students allowed to pass to the next level with outstanding modules at the previous level

The exam board decision for some students may allow you to pass to the next level with outstanding modules at the previous level. Please note, that in this case, Student Finance England will only consider your next level studies for funding. Fees for any repeated modules (from the previous level) will need to be paid directly to the University in full by the published re-enrolment dates.

Payment arrangements

New Students

As part of your enrolment you will need to supply the University with your Payment Advice, which sets out the following:

  • your Course Fee
  • your Tuition Fee Loan amount
  • the amount of Tuition Fee Grant you have been awarded
  • the amount you pay to your University

Continuing Students

You will need to have your Payment Advice available when you re-enrol online. It will set out the following:

  1. Your Course Fee
  2. Your Tuition Fee Loan amount
  3. The amount of Tuition Fee Grant you have been awarded
  4. The amount you pay to your University

You will be asked to make payment of any amount shown in '4' plus any other fees that your course may attract (i.e., compulsory field trip fees) at your enrolment session or by the deadlines for re-enrolment. Tuition Fee Support does not cover field trip costs.

Some new students may not have received their Payment Advice at the time of enrolment. If this applies to you the University will ask you to confirm how much tuition fee loan you have applied for (or intend to apply for). Any amount you do not borrow will be payable at enrolment.

You will remain personally responsible for payment of fees and charges, even if there is an arrangement for the University to receive payment on your behalf from the Students Loans Company.

Part-time Home and EU undergraduates

You may be eligible for an income assessed, non-repayable Part Time Fee Grant and Course Grant to help with the costs of your tuition fees and other course costs, such as books and traveling expenses. The amount you are awarded will depend on both your household income and the intensity of your course. Even if you are granted the maximum level of Part-Time Fee Grant it will not cover the total cost of your yearly tuition fees. For more details see link to help towards fees and course costs for home undergraduate part time students.

At enrolment or re-enrolment you will need to pay at least the first installment of 50% of your tuition fees (see Tuition Fee Regulations PDF 122KB - opens in new window ) in order to get enrolled.

It is your responsibility to contact Student Finance England to make sure your application is processed and you receive a letter confirming your Fee Grant entitlement.

The final date by which you are required to pay your fees in full is 31 January 2011. Students not eligible for Part Time Fee Grant can pay as Self Funded, Sponsored or Part Self/Part Sponsored students
