European students
This section is specific to non-UK students who wish to study in England from the European Union. As a European (EU) student, you will have two main costs to meet – tuition fees and living expenses. All eligible new full-time European undergraduate students are entitled to apply for financial help towards tuition fees, in the form of a tuition fee loan. You may also be entitled to apply for financial help towards living costs if you have lived in the UK or its Islands for three years or more.

European student status
The residence requirements to qualify for student finance as an EU student are complicated. This section does not cover all circumstances for which you may become an eligible student. The Directgov website provides detailed information about qualifying for finance as an EU student. You can also download the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) Guidance Notes "Tuition fees: will I pay the home or overseas rate?"
Some EU nationals may be classified as Home students and qualify for the same level of financial support as Home students. Please refer to the UKCISA Guidance Notes to find out if your circumstances qualify you for this level of support.
If you are classified as a Home student, please visit our sections for:
Tuition fees
European students pay the same tuition fees as Home students. For further details, visit our sections on:
- tuition fees for full-time undergraduate Home students
- tuition fees for part-time undergraduate Home students
- tuition fees for postgraduate Home students.
Additional fees
Some undergraduate course modules include field trips that you will be asked to pay for separately. These extra costs cannot be covered by The Student Loans Company.
Your course may require you to attend other teaching sessions outside the University for which you may be required to pay an additional fee. Some courses require registration with an external body for which a fee is also payable.
Help with tuition fees
Eligible students classified as EU can apply for the same level of financial help towards tuition fees as Home students. You cannot apply for help with living costs.
