Adam Beales – MSc Building Services Engineering

Adam: My name is Adam Beales and I studied an MSc in Building  Services Engineering at South Bank and I graduated in 2008.

I chose to do the course full time; I didn't have obviously full employment at that time. Not a gamble as such but a calculated risk that it would lead to a career stepping stone. So....I took that risk and it did pay off very well in the end.

I went in there not really knowing very much about building services. I come out with an MSc which is very highly regarded in the industry and I walk straight into a job so at the end of the day it did everything I wanted it to do as a course and it was enjoyable at the same time.

The people who are teaching you, you quickly realise are very well respected figures in the industry and the sphere of building services engineering and so what you are being taught is really the cutting edge of technology and many engineers with say 10 years experience haven't got that knowledge because they been working to the old way of doing things. So really that does stand you in good stead to be a modern building services engineer.

There really is a need in this industry for people who have a sound understanding of the energy efficiency issues and how they can marry that into efficient designs.

When I started looking for a job, coming towards the end of the course and I went for some interviews and it is surprising how many people in higher positions in this industry went to South bank University and obviously regard the course very highly.

I think that if you are interested in a career in building services really South Bank has got to be the best place to go. The level of teaching and their friendly approach and the fact that they are so well respected within the industry
