The two engineering design students, Zoe Robson and Leona created FootLume, an electroluminescent rug which lights up whenever pressure is applied to it.

This is one of many of their creations that come under the wing of their company, Zolo Designs. The company is a part of LSBU’s Enterprise Associate Scheme, which is a course which looks to support those who show entrepreneurial abilities. Once they have finished they will receive a formal academic qualification – an MSc in Enterprise by Learning Contract.

FootLume is already proving very popular and has attracted a vast amount of interest and publicity. Leona and Zoë made an appearance on Richard and Judy on Thursday 13 April and were given the opportunity to publicise their creation.

The inspiration came from how often we use our mobile phones to light our way in the dark. By using the same light source, electroluminescent panel and transferring it into a pressure activated rug we have created an energy efficient alternative to turning on a light switch. The concept was part of an Engineering Product Design project between ourselves.

There are many instances in the home when bright light is not what you want - like when you make a trip to the bathroom in the night or if you want to check on a sleeping child or even simply climbing into bed if your partner is already asleep. FootLume gently lights your way simply by walking!
