Psychology laboratories and resources
Our laboratories contain a number of specially designed rooms for our students to conduct a wide range of research. You'll find them on the fifth floor of Joseph Lancaster Building in rooms J501 to J506, adjoining the rear of the second level main Borough Road Building. The laboratory is staffed from 9am to 5pm but is closed for lunch between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
Facilities and apparatus
Our two larger rooms are mostly set aside for teaching and J503 features dedicated computers for psychology students. We stock a wide range of apparatus and test materials that are available for staff and students to use.

Laboratory requirements
A set of procedures need to be followed by undergraduate students wanting to use the psychology laboratory and its facilities. In general:
- You must discuss your requirements with the appropriate member of staff (e.g. project supervisor) and on the basis of this identify your requirements as precisely as possible.
- Liaise with Richard Fenn or Agata Pier our laboratory technicians, who may ask you to complete one or more registration/requisition forms. In a few cases where specialist advice about equipment is needed you may have to contact Simon Noyce, Experimental Officer.
- The new inventory and loans system keeps track of all borrowing and returns. You will be required to sign a loans form and a finance insurance form. Before doing so, please ensure you read all of the conditions as you will be held to them.
- It is your responsibility to ensure that loans are returned on or before the specified return date. Failure to do so will result in sanctions being placed on your future borrowing.
- Please note that you will be held responsible for any loss or damage to equipment you sign out. You may not be allowed to graduate if you have outstanding debts and police prosecution may be actioned if you fail to return loaned items.
Try to make your order very clear. Wherever possible your request will be met but it's advisable to make contingency plans in case it cannot. It is possible there may be delays in fulfilling your order so be prepared for this. Also, demand for some facilities is high so you may have to share them with others.
Research Participation Scheme
Anyone in the department undertaking research can benefit from using our Research Participation Scheme (RPS). We invite all current Level 1 and Level 2 undergraduates (both Single and Combined Honours) to join. However, to use the scheme you must contribute to it by taking part in the research of others. Your involvement will:
- give you the opportunity to learn about various aspects of Psychology and research methodology
- enable other investigators to carry out high quality research
- enable you to recruit participants for your Level 3 Psychology project or other research
Please note you will need to contact the laboratory to set up an RPS account before you can use the system. When you have done you can login to the Psychology RPS System.
