IT accounts
Once you receive your student ID number you can activate your IT account.
When you activate your IT account you will be given a username and password which enables you to access your University email account and a wide range of computing facilities, applications and networked services.
Your student IT account will remain valid during your period of studying at LSBU. When your course finishes your account will be extended for six months so that if you are required to do further work or wish to remove or delete files and email messages you can do so. After this period your account will be automatically disabled for six months and then subsequently deleted. If you re-enrol during this period your account will be made available to you again

Using your IT account
Once you have activated your IT account and obtained your username and password you can:
- log on to PC workstations at one of the University's open access study areas and access a wide range of IT resources
- use your university email account

- use Blackboard, the University's virtual learning environment (the day after you have completed your online enrolment form).
When you activate your IT account a personal "roaming" profile will be created for you automatically. Your personal roaming profile is downloaded when you log on to different University PCs and enables you to get your personalised Windows environment each time you log on. Your profile includes information such as your desktop layout, shortcuts, application preferences and favourites.
When you log on to Windows on campus using your own IT account you will have access to a networked I:drive, which you can find through "My Computer" and "Windows Explorer". This is your personal storage area (50MB) for saving files temporarily and will be available wherever you log on as yourself. You are advised to keep backups of important files, such as course work, on a personal USB stick. If you are a new student , you can access can access a SkyDrive (online storage space) from your Outlook Live account.
To use your IT account effectively:
- make back-up copies of all your work and keep them safe
- do not reveal your password to anyone else
- change your password regularly
- do not allow others to use your IT account
- save your work temporarily to your I:drive or SkyDrive before permanently backing-up to storage media such as a USB memory stick or CD
- never save work to the "Desktop" or "My Documents" folder - if you save files to your "Desktop" or "My Documents" you will increase the size of your profile and it will take longer to download
- if you save files to the C:drive you must transfer them to your own portable storage media before you log off, because routine PC maintenance involves erasing and rebuilding C:drives
- always log off when you have finished working
- make sure you know and comply with your rights and responsibilities concerning the use of the Internet, email and other computing services.
