School Nursing (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) PgDip

Overview

This programme focuses on public health nursing and prepares qualified nurses for registration on the Social Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register. Applicants will choose a defined area of practice either health visiting or school nursing. Both of these pathways promote the health of individuals, groups and populations and prevent ill health through taking a pro-active approach to practice.

Through partnership working, health visitors and school nurses seek to enable clients to take control of their lives whilst safeguarding vulnerable individuals and populations. Public health work that promotes social inclusion and reduces inequalities in health is central to practice. You will be encouraged to identify your learning needs in professional practice, in partnership with your practice teacher, and to develop competencies in areas that will enable you to meet the course learning outcomes. You will be allocated a personal tutor in the University who will help provide academic and professional support whilst you are a student.

Should I take the BSc (Hons) or the PgDip qualification?

Depending on the level of your existing qualifications you will either undertake the BSc (Hons) course, or the PgDip qualification. If you qualified as a nurse with a Bachelor's degree you should take this course - the PgDip. If you qualified as a nurse with an undergraduate Diploma you should take the BSc (Hons) School Nursing (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) programme. The content of the courses is the same.

Modules

You will normally complete all eight units, including a professional practice unit relevant to the defined pathway.

Employability

This programme is for qualified nurses who wish to further develop their professional knowledge and skills to enable them to work as health visitors in the community promoting the health of children and families or school nurses working with the school-aged population. Qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurses may also obtain employment in the wider field of public health, for example, in community development work.

Students on the BSc programme may wish to further their studies in the field of public health. Postgraduate Diploma students may study for an MSc in SCPHN through doing a dissertation after qualifying as a SCPHN. Take a look at our online CPPD prospectus for more information about CPD options.

Entry requirements

Normally applicants will be required to have a Bachelor degree equivalent to Second Class Honours Upper Division (2:1). Applicants must have sponsorship from an employing organisation that provides a practice placement and practice teacher to fulfil NMC standards. You also require current registration with the NMC as a first level nurse with a relevant diploma or 60 credits Level 2 minimum including research APEL/APL considered on an individual basis as well as recent and relevant professional experience, normally two years minimum.

Preparing to apply

  1. Consider where you would like to work and arrange to meet the person who leads the health visiting service to gain more information about what they are looking for from applicants. Some organisations are keen to support people who have worked within the service already; however, this is not the same for all organisations.
  2. Develop your general literacy and numeracy skills. All applicants will be required to complete an unseen numeracy and literacy test as part of the application process. This is required before your application can progress to the shortlisting stage. It is important to book this early, and the dates will usually be included in the information about the post. You may find the learning strategies within the BBC Bitesize website helpful.
  3. Consider your existing skills and knowledge and how they will help you to meet the requirements of the course. If it is more than two years since you last completed an academic course for which you needed to submit a written assignment then you should consider undertaking a course before you apply. It's also important to be IT literature as part of your preparation for the course. During your time at University you will use the computer a great deal and confidence in this area is essential. As a minimum requirement you should be familiar with using Microsoft Word, email and the internet.
  4. Do some background reading, some suggested areas include:
    1. The role and function of the health visitor / school nurse / public health nurse  
    2. The National policy context in which school nursing operates; Department of Health - Healthy Child Programme and Department of Health and Public Health England - Maximising the school nursing team contribution to the public health of school aged children
    3. Other useful sources of information about school nursing include the GOV.UK website , or the British Journal of School Nursing

Application Process

  1. Identify the Trust you want to be sponsored by. All sponsorship opportunities are advertised on NHS jobs and the Trust's vacancy listings on their website.
  2. On your application form state London South Bank University as your University of choice.
  3. Note there is no separate application form via LSBU, when completing your application form on NHS jobs or the Trust website. Ensure that you clearly state your education to show you meet the entry requirements.
  4. Successful applicants are invited for interview with a panel consisting of both Trust and LSBU representatives.
  5. Candidates who are successful at interview will be sent an offer letter from the University.

Additional information:

London is divided into three Local Education and Training Boards (LETBs) and each have a different number of sponsorship opportunities available across the Trusts that they cover.

Applicants can apply to more than one Trust, however applicants must not accept more than one offer if successful. For applicants who are being seconded to the course by their employers as their sponsoring Trust, contact course director, Maxine Jameson, if you are not required to have a formal interview.

Enrolment and Induction

Enrolment takes place before you start your course. On completing the process, new students formally join the University. Enrolment consists of two stages: online, and your face-to-face enrolment meeting. The online process is an online data gathering exercise that you will complete yourself, then you will be invited to your face-to-face enrolment meeting.

In September, applicants who have accepted an unconditional offer to study at LSBU will be sent details of induction, which is when they are welcomed to the University and their School. Induction helps you get the best out of your university experience, and makes sure you have all the tools to succeed in your studies.
