- Essentials of biosciences for health
This module provides understanding of the structure and function of main body systems and how the human body maintains homeostasis. The content of this module has been selected and developed to equip you with the necessary knowledge to inform your nursing practice and for progression throughout the programme. This knowledge will enable you to go on to develop an understanding of pathophysiological processes and the fundamentals of pharmacology. You’ll be supported in your learning with extensive use of teaching strategies such as key-lectures, workbooks and e-learning.
- Person-centred care
This module will introduce the knowledge and skills required to deliver nursing care in a variety of clinical settings. The module will enable you to understand and utilise person centred approach to care from an ethical, legal and professional perspective. In addition you’ll be introduced to the use of critical thinking skills in nursing assessment and in the delivery of patient-centred care.
- Professional skills for adult nursing
In this module you’ll be equipped with the essential and professional skills and knowledge that underpins contemporary nursing practice across the adult life span. Introducing key issues in providing safe and high quality care to older people including the assessment of delirium, dementia, and risk of falling, continence and key basic interventions to manage these conditions in older people. Using safe, simulated environments, supervised placement experiences, and independent learning opportunities, you’ll be enabled to develop and expand your knowledge, practical ability and professional attitudes in promoting high quality care.
- Practice experience year 1
Over the year you’ll undertake three six week placements; one in a ward, one department based or out of hospital and one further hospital based ward or department. In these settings, you’ll have 37.5 hours of practice learning per week. In addition you’ll have access to a virtual learning environment.
- Concepts of inter-professional and collaborative practice
This module introduces the place and value of inter-professional and collaborative working in health and social care delivery. The module aims to support your development of the necessary communication, personal, partnership working and reflective practice skills required to meet the needs of clients/carers and diverse populations who are at the centre of inter-professional health and social care delivery.
- Introducing evidence based practice in adult nursing
This module introduces the nature of evidence in health and social care and the importance of evidence–based practice for adults and their safety and quality of experience. You’ll develop skills in accessing evidence, gain familiarity with the library, including use of electronic databases, and learn how to use the university’s referencing system for your material. You’ll learn key terms relating to research and evidence-based practice and be introduced to an evidence-based practice model.
- Applied physiology and pathophysiology
This module will extend and deepen your understanding of human physiology, which will then be applied to physiological changes that take place during disease processes. Knowledge of cell receptors and some receptor groups will be linked to physiological activity in different systems then linked to the effects of certain drugs and the changes they elicit within body systems.
- Appraising evidence-based practice in adult nursing
This module considers how research questions are generated from practice with application to adult nursing. The steps in conducting research and audit, and the main research methods in health and social care are explained and associated ethical aspects are discussed. Methods of analysing and presenting different types of research data are introduced. The rationale for appraising research is considered and critical appraisal tools are reviewed. The module equips you with the core skills and understanding to appraise evidence and assess its appropriateness to be implemented into practice.
- Intermediate professional skills in adult nursing practice
This second year module will build upon previous learning and enable you to develop and expand your understanding of adult nursing as well your practice skills and knowledge. In addition, this module provides theoretical knowledge which when applied in practical settings will improve and enhance end of life and palliative care to patients and families adopting a holistic focus. It’ll encourage you to reflect on your own values and beliefs about death and dying and how this may affect interactions with patients, careers and families.
- Public health and primary care
This module provides theoretical knowledge which when applied in practical settings can improve the health and prevention of disease in societies, organisations and communities. You’ll be exposed to a variety of health promotion modules that will enable you to provide advice and support that will enable service user’s families and carers to make changes to improve their health and that of their families /others.
- Inter-professional learning in practice
During this module you’ll build upon the concepts of inter-professional learning and collaborative practice gained in year one of the programme and expand to look at the environment, teamwork and collaboration. It will promote the exploration of the complexities of inter-professional practice and collaboration in the clinical situation working with peers and health consumers.
- Practice experience year 2
Across year two there are three practice learning opportunities of varying lengths totalling 24 weeks and will include specialist settings, for example emergency care, intensive care, operating department, day surgery and a primary care setting and an acute care ward in a hospital setting. This will provide you with an opportunity to develop a range of skills across a range of areas.
- Implementing evidence-based practice in adult nursing
A key aspect of evidence-based practice is the implementation of available research into practice. To equip you with the core skills and understanding to be able to implement appropriate evidence and utilise and evaluate in practice.
- Clinical decision making and role transition in adult nursing
This module has been designed to build upon the skills and knowledge gained in years one and two that enhance your leadership, assessment and decision making skills and enable you to smoothly transition into first destination post. This module has also been designed to enable you to demonstrate patient safety, and high quality care. You’ll have the opportunity to reflect and appraise your own learning and development needs as you approach the transition from student to registered practitioner.
- Care of the adult deteriorating patient
This module is designed to support pre-registration students to acquire the knowledge and skills required for recognising and managing an adult patient who is deteriorating. This module aims to facilitate you to undertake a range of clinical activities in a simulated environment to develop competency in caring for a patient who is deteriorating including recognition, A- G assessment, application of SBAR and management of the patient.
- Applied pharmacology and medicines optimisation in adult nursing
This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of pharmacology and medicines management with an emphasis on clinical application. It will explore and discuss the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics alongside the pharmacology of groups of drugs commonly used in clinical practice. It will consider and evaluate the role and responsibilities of the nurse in relation to the safe administration of medication in clinical practice, including competency with drug calculations.
- Improving quality, change management and leadership
This module is the final inter-professional learning module that will explore leadership, quality improvement and change within organisations from an inter-professional perspective. The module will look at strategic, evidence-based approaches to change management in a range of environments. It will integrate the perspectives of service users and take an inter-professional approach.
- Practice experience year 3
Year three consists of two practice learning opportunities with the final 12 week practice learning opportunity being undertaken in the Host Trust with identified sign-off mentors or in a primary care setting.
Adult nursing as a career
The course will enable you to develop a wide range of employability skills through the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching which leads to a professional qualification and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Role and responsibilities
It is said that no two days as an adult nurse are the same. However common tasks include monitoring vital signs like pulse and blood pressure; meeting the hygiene needs of patients and providing care for patients. With experience, there are multiple opportunities for specialisation as your career progresses - such as: district nurse, occupational health nurse, sexual health nurse and specialist nurse.
Working hours and salary
Hours can be demanding for adult nurses – with long shifts, unsocial hours and possibly being called to work at the last minute all common. An adult nurse starts on a salary around £21,000 – however with career progression this could increase up to £30,764 - £98,453 in senior posts (Prospects).
This course will prepare you for a career in a wide range of rewarding adult nursing opportunities across both general medical and surgical wards as well as specialist units such as Accident and Emergency or intensive care. Many graduates take their first post as qualified practitioners in the NHS Trusts and hospitals which they gained experience during their training. Previous graduates have achieved prominent employment positions in areas such as advanced clinical practice, management of health services or as researchers or lecturers.

Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.
At LSBU, you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations.
If you are based at our Southwark campus you are able to experience placements at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, University College London Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. You will also undertake a placement in the community.
If you are based at our Havering campus you are able to experience placements at Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital; along with a placement within the community.
Structure of placements
Placements are spread over the three years:

You'll receive Preparation for Practice prior to each practice learning opportunity and will meet with your personal tutor following each experience to reflect on your practice, review your practice learning and assessment portfolio and begin to plan your learning outcomes for the next practice experience. Assessment of practice is by completion of the Practice Assessment Document (Pan London).
Across year two there are three practice learning opportunities of varying lengths totalling 24 weeks and will include specialist settings, for example emergency care, intensive care, operating department, day surgery and a primary care setting and an acute care ward in a hospital setting. This will provide you with an opportunity to develop a range of skills across a range of areas. You'll continue to have scheduled Preparation for Practice prior to each practice learning opportunity and your personal tutor continues to meet with you on a one-to-one basis to support the integration of theory and practice.
Year three consists of two practice learning opportunities with the final 12 week practice learning opportunity being undertaken in the Host Trust with identified sign-off mentors or in a primary care setting. You'll continue to have scheduled Preparation for Practice prior to each practice learning opportunity and your personal tutor continues to meet with you on a one-to-one basis to support the integration of theory and practice. You'll have a 4-week elective in which you can develop your knowledge and skills in an area of particular interest. Options for this might be international experience overseas, an international perspective without travelling overseas, experience gained with a charitable organisation or national centres of excellence.

Whilst in the clinical placement we will ensure you receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Christine's interests are in life sciences and community nursing.
Dr Chowthi-Williams is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health and Social Care with interests in Public Health, Primary Care, Change Management and Leadership, and how change is managed in organisations. She is a Link Lecturer for North East London NHS Foundation Trust, in particular for the Redbridge Borough.
Gary Francis is Associate Professor and School Lead for Practice Skills Learning and Simulation. Gary oversees the student and staff activity that occurs in the skills labs and helps support and develops the clinical skills and simulation capacity and capability with academic staff, technical support, clinical partners and students.
Amanda Hesman is a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing teaching on the pre-registration nursing programme and has clinical links with Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
Pam is a Registered General Nurse with an extensive clinical background in neuroscience nursing, having worked in several tertiary centres. Her last clinical post was as a Matron for a surgical directorate in a district general hospital. Her current role is within the School of Health and Social Care as a Senior Lecturer in adult nursing.
Pam has clinical interests in acute care, neurosciences nursing, management and clinical leadership.
Siobhan has fifteen years' clinical experience within neurocritical care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Her interests also include the acute and ongoing care of neuroscience patients from a clinical perspective.
Anthony provides academic leadership to a dedicated group of academic and clinically focused staff, each of whom contributes to our portfolio of pre-registration adult nursing and/or post-graduate CPPD courses for healthcare professionals.
Dr Moorley is a Senior Lecturer in adult nursing and has an academic background in public health and health promotion. He is a registered nurse (Adult) and practices in intensive care therapy.
Dr Louise Terry is Reader in Law and Ethics, and specialises in teaching health and social care law and ethics. She has particular interest in withholding and withdrawing medical treatment, resource allocation, nursing wisdom, public administration and professional practice.
Dr Thomas is a registered general nurse with a clinical background in kidney disease and diabetes. She also has a Doctorate in Professional Practice.
Adult Nursing skills laboratories
We have two adult nursing skills laboratories at our Southwark campus and three at our Havering campus. These labs are set up like nursing wards and are used by all student nurses and midwives throughout their courses. They learn manual handling and basic life support skills and skills that are specific to their field of nursing or midwifery.
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins: SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a student's actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.
The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse. Read more about SimMan.
The School of Health and Social Care uses a variety of mannequins to help students learn clinical skills in a simulated care environment in laboratories.

Interviews and assessments
As part of the selection process, you'll be expected to undertake a computer based assessment on campus which identifies your attributes for nursing and gives you an indication of various scenarios you might face. You'll also be asked to complete an interview and numeracy and literacy test. Strong numeracy and literacy skills are essential for nursing students.

If offered a place, you must successfully complete both a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) and occupational health check, and provide proof of ordinary residency requirements and satisfactory references. A valid passport is required for enrolment purposes.
Those whom English is not their first language must achieve a minimum score of 7.0 overall or equivalent, with not less than 7.0 in the listening and reading sections and not less than 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections for the International English Language Test Score (IELTS) at the time of application.

Recent changes to funding of Health and Social Care courses
If you’re starting a pre-registration undergraduate course in nursing, midwifery or allied healthcare in September 2017 you’ll be eligible to apply for tuition fee loans via Student Finance England, as NHS bursaries will no longer be available.

Funding for students with existing undergraduate degrees
Students who have previously studied another undergraduate degree may be eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan for a second undergraduate degree in nursing, midwifery and allied healthcare. More information is available by reading the Council of Deans of Health page.

Possible fee changes
Current regulatory proposals suggest that institutions will be permitted to increase fee levels in line with inflation up to a specified fee cap. Specifically, LSBU may be permitted to increase its fees for new and existing Home and EU undergraduate students from 2017/18 onwards. The University reserves the right to increase its fees in line with changes to legislation, regulation and any governmental guidance or decisions.
We offer students considerable financial help through scholarships, bursaries, charitable funds, loans and other financial support. Many of our scholarships are given as direct tuition fee discounts and we encourage all eligible students to apply for our Access Bursary. Prepare to start
The following information is for applicants once you have been successful at interview and have been offered a place on your chosen course.
Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) and Declaration of character and conduct form
You are required to complete a declaration at your interview and declare any previous convictions, cautions, warnings or reprimands. After the interview you will also be asked to complete a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) (formerly known as the Criminal Records Bureau or CRB). To check the categories as identified by the DBS as being filtered and will therefore not be included in any criminal record certificate issued by the DBS look at the filtering rules for the criminal record check certificates. For more information please read our DBS FAQs.
To complete the DBS application and get your ID documents checked, please follow the steps below:
If you already have a DBS certificate and are part of the DBS update service, we need to see the hard copy of your DBS certificate. You’ll also need to e-mail email@example.com the details below so that we can perform a status check on the update service website:
- Your DBS certificate number
- Your name as it is on the DBS certificate
- Your date of birth
Once you have completed this process, please ensure you bring three accepted ID documents so we can verify your application. You can visit the Southwark Student Help Desk in the K2 building during working hours, Monday-Friday (9am-11am, 1pm-4pm). No appointment is needed. Please find the link above with a list of the appropriate ID.
If you are unable to physically come to campus and show your three forms of required ID, you can use the Post Office which offers an identity document checking service for a fee of £10.50.
- Take photocopies of your 3 items of ID documents and the 3 original documents with you.
- The Post Office will stamp the form and the photocopies and give them back to you
- Documents will then need to be scanned (including their post office receipt so that we know that it has gone through due process) and sent to firstname.lastname@example.org

You need to complete an occupational health assessment once you have been given an offer on a health and social care course.

You must take the GP vaccination and screening history form to your GP for them to complete, sign and stamp. This must be done prior to enrolment. This form also needs to be taken to the meeting with the occupational health nurse following enrolment in which the nurse can check immunisation status and confirm this for your placement. You should be aware that if you do not complete the occupational health process you will not be permitted on placement and this may jeopardise your continuation on your course.
Applicants who have met the conditions of an offer need to download and complete an online medical questionnaire. This will go to our current occupational health provider. Students should apply for accommodation at London South Bank University (LSBU) as soon as possible, once we have made an offer of a place on one of our academic courses.
Enrolment and Induction
Enrolment takes place before you start your course. On completing the process, new students formally join the University. Enrolment consists of two stages: online, and your face-to-face enrolment meeting. The online process is an online data gathering exercise that you will complete yourself, then you will be invited to your face-to-face enrolment meeting.
In September, applicants who have accepted an unconditional offer to study at LSBU will be sent details of induction, which is when they are welcomed to the University and their School. Induction helps you get the best out of your university experience, and makes sure you have all the tools to succeed in your studies.
You will receive fixed holiday periods, which will not follow the normal University timetable. Further details will be available upon commencement of the course.
Practice placements are provided under our contract with NHS Trusts and other organisations. On some health and social care courses you may find local arrangements require you to attend practice placements outside the normal work hours (evening, nights, weekends and bank holiday).
If you are required to wear a uniform on placement and during some practical sessions in the skills laboratories then this will be provided along with a formal name badge.
ODP students will be required to wear theatre scrubs on placement, which will be supplied by the host Trust. During practical sessions in the skills laboratories you will be required to wear LSBU scrubs which will be provided, along with a formal name badge. ODP students will receive one set of scrubs. No further items will be issued, and you'll have to pay for any additional or replacement uniform.
