What is Fast Track to Higher Education?

Today, a Higher Education qualification such as a degree or HND is essential for many jobs. Few students arrive at University with all the skills they will need to be a successful learner in a modern University setting. Often, students find it difficult to identify their own needs, are unable to find the means to realise their plans, or have no clear idea of what University will be like before they start.

London South Bank University's Fast Track to Higher Education is a summer programme that has been designed to equip you with the skills required for a smooth transition into University.

The exciting programme offers you a choice of courses in Mathematics, Science, English, Communication for academic study, Information Technology skills or a combination of some of these subjects: Maths; Communication with IT for Academic Study; Combined Maths and Science Literacy; English with IT for EU students. The courses are designed to help you identify any gaps in your knowledge and provide you with a tailored learning programme to improve your skills.

Expert tuition, using the latest teaching methods, will help you make the grade. A certificate of achievement will be provided when you have completed the course. It will be hard work - but worth it. You may then progress on to a range of courses at London South Bank University and on to your new future as hundreds of students have already done in previous years.

The Fast Track is NOT suitable for students already at universities other than LSBU.

What is on offer?

English with IT for EU students

The course is aimed at students over the age of 18 who have not previously studied an academic subject where the language of instruction is English. Individual needs will be discussed with subject tutors at the start of the course. It is designed to enable you to develop the skills and knowledge you will need during a course of academic study, with an emphasis on language and grammar.

During the course, you will have an opportunity to receive advice and guidance on careers progression and employment prospects from the University's experienced Careers Advisers, and meet the University's Course Admissions Tutors to find out which London South Bank courses you can progress to.

The course is also suitable for existing London South Bank University students who need to increase their chances of getting a good qualification or degree classification.

Mode of study: 15 hours per week
Starting date: Monday 25th June 2012
Duration: Six weeks
Minimum age: 18

Maths

The Maths course is aimed at students who want to progress to Higher Education in areas such as computing, engineering, sciences, business studies and construction but lack formal qualifications in maths.

You will be given expert tuition in maths at the level appropriate to your ability and will be working on acquiring the maths skills necessary to complete your studies at University successfully.

During the course, you will have an opportunity to receive advice and guidance on careers progression and employment prospects from the University's experienced Careers Advisers, and meet the University's Course Admissions Tutors to find out which London South Bank courses you can progress to.

The course is also suitable for existing London South Bank University students who need to increase their chances of getting a good qualification or degree classification.

Communication with IT for Academic Study

The Communication with IT for Academic Study course is aimed at students over the age of 18 who have previously studied an academic subject where the language of instruction was English.  It is designed for those who want to progress to Higher Education, but need to develop effective approaches to learning and academic studyThe course will help you to improve your reading skills, develop reference and research skills, plan, draft and edit assignments, write essays and reports, participate in discussions and plan and deliver an oral presentation.

You will be given expert tuition in communication at the level appropriate to your ability and will be working on acquiring the communication skills necessary to complete your studies at University successfully.

During the course, you will have an opportunity to receive advice and guidance on careers progression and employment prospects from the University's experienced Careers Advisers, and meet the University's Course Admissions Tutors to find out which London South Bank courses you can progress to.

The course is also suitable for existing London South Bank University students who need to increase their chances of getting a good qualification or degree classification.

Combined Maths & Science Literacy

The Combined course is an intensive programme of study aimed at students who need to develop their maths and science skills. You can study both the Maths and Science courses in parallel. The Science Literacy course is aimed at students who want to progress to Higher Education in the Applied Science area, but need to further develop their scientific literacy.

You will be given expert tuition in biological, chemical and physical sciences at the level appropriate to your ability and will be working on acquiring the scientific skills necessary to complete your studies at university successfully. Much of the course will be delivered through practical investigation to develop interdisciplinary laboratory skills. In parallel, you will also be extending your mathematical skills, to complement your scientific literacy.

  • Maths

    Mode of study: 15 hours per week

  • Science

    Mode of study: 9 hours per week
    Starting date: Tuesday 3rd July 2012
    Duration: Four weeks
    Minimum age: 18
