SU President 2010 - 2011
BA Business Administration

2007 – 2010

I have used the service for help with career planning, CV advice and a mock interview.
The staff are helpful and well-informed. The support I received helped me to succeed at an interview for an internship with Goldman Sachs.

A wide variety of services are offered that would benefit students seeking any type of employment or advice. I believe strongly in the service and that it is relevant to all students.

Hui Yi Lin
Graduate. BA Business Studies

2006 – 2010

I am an international student who has received lots of support from the Employability & Careers Service, including help with writing my CV and personal statements, preparing for interview and assessment centres, placement advice, a mock job interview and practice in taking psychometric tests.

The support helped me to get a one year internship with Corus Steel, a blue chip company, which was an excellent preparation for a career in business.

I think the Employability & Careers Service is one of the most important departments at LSBU. They can really help you to get your career started.

Ross Warrell
BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

2010 Finalist

I have used the Employability & Careers Service for guidance on writing my CV as well as a mock interview in preparation for applying for a summer placement. I’ve also taken advantage of the mock aptitude tests run by the service, to give me an insight into what to expect of the real thing.

The mock interview was extremely useful as it accurately reflected the actual interview I was given. The feedback from the mock interview allowed me to improve some of my responses and feel confident in the answers I was giving. I was successful in the interview I had practised for and got the summer placement I was after, as an analyst with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

The service is an excellent resource for both students and graduates. I’d also recommend it to mature students who have not gone through interviews/aptitude tests for a while as a way of getting back into the right mindset.

I am now working as an Graduate Engineer/Analyst, within the Land Battlespace Systems Department at DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory),  part of the Ministry of Defence.

Daniel Loughlin
Staff Nurse at University College London Hospital  Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. Diploma in Adult Nursing

2007 – 2010

The Employability & Careers Service helped me to understand objectively what my strengths are and gave me an appreciation of how to write a memorable personal statement that led me to secure a place at an assessment centre with a leading hospital trust. Face to face advice on interview technique, just prior to graduating, was a great warm up for the interview itself. I received the job offer 25 hours later.

I couldn’t have made such a good job of my personal statement without the help of the Employability & Careers Service.

BA Accounting and Finance

Finalist

I went to the Employability and Careers Service for help with writing CVs and personal statements and for a mock interview. The service also arranged for me to take a numerical and verbal reasoning test that is used by leading graduate recruiters, so that I would be better prepared for assessment centres.

As a result of what I learnt through the service I was able to secure internships with two banks in the City in 2010: a spring internship in April with Standard Bank (an investment bank) and also a summer internship with Ghana International Bank, where I gained commercial awareness and diverse practical and professional skills.

I had lacked confidence about my ability to get an internship, but the Employability and Careers Service made me believe in myself. I would recommend every student to make good use of it.

Having received further support from the Employability and Careers Service, I gained an internship in the Global Data team at Bloomberg which I completed in summer 2011. I am now employed as an Earning Estimate Analyst at Bloomberg.

Faiza Ali

Graduate. BSc Diagnostic Radiography

2007 – 2010

I used the service for a mock interview before going to a job interview for a radiography post. I just did not feel confident about going for a job interview. The practice and feedback that I received from the Employability & Careers Service made me feel more prepared for the interview and less nervous. The advice and feedback that I received from the Careers Adviser enabled me to answer all the questions at the job interview.

I would strongly recommend the service.

I have used the service for assistance with writing my CV and for information about placements and mentoring schemes.

The service was exceptional and I regret that I didn’t approach the Employability & Careers Service before my final year. It really made me stop and think about what I wanted to get across to future employers.

The help I received enabled me to make my CV more coherent and presentable for future employers. I have also acquired a mentor who is a practicing solicitor who helps me understand how I can improve my chances of success and offers support at every opportunity.

The service is something that should definitely be grasped with both hands in the first year. Things like CV’s, personal statements and placements can take a long time to get right. So take advantage of what the service can offer at the earliest opportunity.

Stefanie Pohlmann

Former LSBU Research Officer, Primary Care Research Network (PCRN) for Greater London

Faculty of Health and Social Care

I was delighted to discover that as a member of staff I could seek help from the ECS too. My job at LSBU involved facilitating research studies of importance for the NHS.

I went to the Employability & Careers Service to get feedback on a CV and cover letter that I drafted to find a job as Clinical Project Manager. The advice I received was constructive, very detailed and specific. The Careers Adviser helped me to see my application from the employer’s perspective. I went through my documents again and made amendments as suggested. I sent out an application in September, got a job offer in October and have started working in a job I always wanted! I have now left LSBU and work as a Project Manager for a clinical study.

Book your appointment with the Employability & Careers Service today! Don’t waste your time on standard mass applications, but seek professional and individual advice to improve and create a successful application.

I have used the full range of services at the Employability & Careers Service and would recommend it to students. The help I received with written applications, plus information about internship opportunities and interview technique helped me to get a Shell Step Summer Internship with Small Business Solutions against tough competition. The internship gave me valuable experience of I.T. project management.

I have found the Employability & Careers Service to be friendly, professional, well-informed and helpful.
