Enhancing your employability - beyond your degree

The LSBU Employability Award will give you the practical employability skills sought after by all graduate employers. You will be supported and encouraged to gain experience relevant to your future career before you graduate.

The LSBU Employability Award is a 12 month program which involves 4 core elements:

  • Work Experience
  • Employability Skills Workshops
  • Mentoring Scheme / Student Business Project
  • Leadership Programme

Employers want more than just a graduate they
want a brilliant graduate

Don't get caught in the "Can't get a job because I don't have the experience, can't get the experience because I don't have a job" cycle!

Developing practical employability skills whilst studying is essential to your future success. Students can choose from the options below, but must commit to undertaking a minimum of 45 hours practical work experience throughout the duration of the award. Work experience allows you to explore career options and also to demonstrate to employers you have experience in your chosen field. Use these options to demonstrate you have the skills for your future career:

Options:

  • Part time work or Summer placement
  • Voluntary work
  • University activities
    • Students Union Sports and Societies
    • Course Representative
    • Student Employee
    • Student Ambassador

Employability Skills Workshops

Students will be required to complete a series of workshops to ensure they have the skills required to compete successfully for a job. Students can select from a range of workshops but to be awarded the LSBU Employability Award you must complete the following:

  • Online Career Management Skills
  • Marketing yourself on paper:
    • CV's
    • Interview
    • Application Forms/ Covering letters

Optional Workshops:

  • Assertiveness in the workplace
  • Job hunting in a changing graduate market
  • Success at assessment centers

A look behind the scenes at your future career interest

As part of the award you will be assigned a mentor, who will be a successful professional from the world of work. As part of the mentoring program you will shadow your mentor for one day to gain first hand experience about what they do and more importantly if it is for you! You will meet your mentor 4 times throughout the programme to discuss your goals and career options you might want to consider. Mentoring will allow you to gain valuable knowledge about your career interests.

Student Business Projects

Students will work in a team to solve a business issue provided by a company. Students will be expected to provide a business solution and present this to the company with a supporting report. Companies will provide a background to the business challenge and provide students with the opportunity to interview relevant members of staff to complete the project successfully.

Developing the leaders of tomorrow today

Industry leaders will be invited to speak to you about their journey and the challenges they faced along the way and how they overcame them. You will then take part in a workshop to develop and harness your own skills. As part of the leadership programme you will be required to attend a minimum of 2 leadership sessions. The workshops will aim to develop the following skills:

  • Negotiation
  • Networking
  • Assertiveness
  • Decision Making
  • Leadership
  • Team building


Why Get Involved?

The graduate job market has become increasingly competitive. Graduate recruiters look for a good degree, and in addition expect applicants to demonstrate practical examples of their employability. This award maximises your chances of achieving employment upon graduation.

You will gain relevant work experience while you study and will graduate not only with your degree but the LSBU Employability Award too!

The LSBU Employability Award is open to all full-time undergraduates studying at LSBU. Any final year applicants will be considered for a week intensive employability programme in June.
