Tamrat works in London's iconic Paddington station as part of Network Rail's rail telecoms design team, which designs systems for all over the rail network

Tamrat Mulugeta was working on an IT helpdesk prior to joining LSBU, but his interest was piqued after seeing an advert and becoming interested in the opportunities that the University could offer him. “I chose to study BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering because the course combines maths and physics, two of my favourite subjects,” says Tamrat. “After investigating the course, and seeing what former students had gone on to achieve, it was also clear to me that it offered excellent career prospects too, so it ticked all the boxes for me.” 

Diversity on campus

Upon joining LSBU, Tamrat was delighted to see just how diverse a university it is. “I met people from so many different backgrounds, and everyone gets along together so well,” he says. “LSBU has a great infrastructure for giving people the chance to get to know each other, and it is so easy to make friends from different courses, cultures and countries. It really underlined to me how there are good opportunities for people from all backgrounds, and that people shouldn’t be afraid of making the decision to attend university.”

My degree gave me so many useful skills that I use every day in my current role, and I know it has also given me the theoretical understanding and knowledge to develop my career further over time.

Designing systems

After he graduated, Tamrat secured a job with Network Rail, based at Paddington as part of the rail telecoms design team. His role involves designing and building telecoms systems for many different aspects of the rail network – this includes, signal lights, display boards, apps, train communication systems and alarms. “I really enjoy my job, and I’m a very proud LSBU alumni as well,” he beams.
