Rehan Farooq, BSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering, LSBU alumni

Electric pylons

London South Bank University graduate Rehan left to become an Electrical Engineer at Mouchel, a consulting and business services group

After relocating from his home town of Middlesbrough to London to work towards an HND at LSBU, Rehan then did a top-up year to receive a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. "I have never forgotten the support and encouragement LSBU's lecturers showed me when I started. I went on to start a PhD at the University of Leeds in Electro-Ceramic research but realised it wasn't for me. I wanted to do something different that would lead to a more satisfying career."

Throughout his studies Rehan had been working as a salesman in an electrical store and had always been intrigued by commercial sales. "I took a role as an account manager at a telecoms company Dialogue Communications based in Sheffield, and it was a brilliant move. It gave me a big boost in confidence; going out to face blue chip company clients, local authorities, emergency services etc. and presenting smarter services, pitching contracts to them and signing them up. I've been through the whole procedure and it's given me skills I implement in my role today."

Pursuing dreams

After joining Mouchel's Academy Graduate Programme in November 2007, Rehan felt like he had really found a career for life with the company. He was originally taken on as a graduate electrical designer, working on a contract for Yorkshire Water. The team's job was to maintain the clean and waste water treatment works and pump stations across the county. Typically, his day involved managing five or so projects, all at different stages.

"I got to work alongside a variety of engineers: mechanical, geotechnical and process. It was a very steep learning curve and I learnt a lot about different engineering disciplines." Just recently he was offered a six-month secondment as a site-based resident engineer. The role involves monitoring the installation and commissioning flow instrumentation over 200 sites across the County of Donegal, Ireland. Rather than being in the office doing design, he will get to see the installation side.

"My key message would be if you're determined and ambitious, you'll never stop pursuing your dreams. That's what I've done. I've been very persistent, I've done other jobs, but I've kept on going and it has paid off."

At Mouchel, Rehan is now providing electrical design services in a partnership environment with Costain.
