Oliver Weston, MSc Building Surveying, scholarship recipient
Some students might have a career path clearly laid out when they start their undergraduate studies, while others only discover their true vocation later in life
That's why some of our courses, such as MSc Building Surveying, are designed to help graduates like Oliver move into new career paths.
Oliver was working in property management specialising in reactive maintenance, but knew that it wasn't the right career for him. "I wasn't really happy in property management," he recalls, "but I met a building surveyor from Calford Seaden who was a really nice guy. He got me thinking about building surveying as a career option."
The perfect course
Oliver began researching the best universities to study at. Through his own contacts, he met more surveyors, some of whom were LSBU graduates and all of whom spoke highly of LSBU. Intrigued, Oliver attended an LSBU Open Day, which confirmed Oliver's instinct that our MSc Building Surveying was the perfect course for him. Accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), it is designed for graduates who already work in non-surveying roles in property management but want to move into surveying.
Oliver applied for a Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship to help finance his studies and to his delight, his application was successful. He thinks that the scholarship will make "a huge difference" to his education.
"It has taken the weight off massively," he explains. "The train fare from my home in Brighton to London alone was a worry, let alone all the other expenses! However, it is all much more affordable now because of the financial help. I'll also be able to come to London to visit libraries and sites that are relevant to the course."
